Chapter 38 by Groffin Groffin

Does the night pass calmly, or are there disturbances?

It's a restful stay

The four of you accept the nightshirts that Rhea hands out to you, and go around the back of the house and find the large tub filled and set out for you.

You all wash quickly by what's left of the light, Xallia insisting that you give her a handjob to perk her up again from the long march. Once you're all cleaned up and in the billowing sleeping gowns, you file back into your room, two to a bed, Xallia laying next to you this time.

"At least we're getting horses tomorrow, my legs are killing me." Xallia tries to joke.

"We're going to need to ride them to their limits tomorrow," you answer back, distracted. "So much time lost on foot, we can't let another day pass with the demons operating with impunity."

Xallia still tries to treat it with levity. "Oh Sabine, don't chomp at the bit so much, everything is gonna be-"

"Everything won't be fine!" You shout, panting as Xallia flinches back and Glenda and Anya look at you with trepidation.

After a lengthy pause, Xallia cups your cheek.

"Sabine, I'm sorry. You're right, defeating Thoros at the Abbey won't erase the damage he has caused. But we can stop him before he can spread any farther. We can free the Sisters, even if they can't return to their previous lives, the bastard won't **** them anymore. There's a new dawn, you're gonna herald great things, good things."

"How can you be so sure?" You question, feeling tears coming on despite yourself.

"Heh, didn't you hear the news? A couple of trainee Paladins converted a succubus to a holy warrior. Sounds to me that the good guys are running around dropping miracles and triumphs like apple seeds."

Overcome with emotion, you embrace Xallia tightly, shuddering with small sobs as you nuzzle her neck while she cards her fingers through your fiery hair. Glenda and Anya pad over to your bed as well, pressing comforting pats and kisses to your shoulders.

"There, there. We'll be at the High Abbey this time tomorrow, and everything will look better once we have some back up taking care of stage two." Xallia croons out.

After a few minutes, you calm down. "Ugh, what have you done to me? I've never been so overemotional before all this."

"It's fine Sabine," now it's Glenda who assures you. "These last few days have been a bit more than intense than most people can take stoically. You have every right to unload now and then."

"I suppose," You say, then try to crack a weak grin. "Still, I feel far too ****. As much as I want this trip done with, maybe running into a little skirmish between now and Grelagen would be good to make sure I've not gone too soft for demon-slaying."

"Hey," Anya chides as she and Glenda head back to bed. "Don't make it out like we have to go back and storm the gates ourselves. We're getting an army together to do that, remember?"

You laugh at that. "True enough, but I'm the one with the holy sword and I'm the one who missed out on my promotion ceremony. I can't think of a better way to restart my journey to paladin than leading this next charge."

With that your party goes to sleep, and you can't speak for all of them, but your dreams for certain are full of bloody vengeance and righteous glory.

Does the final leg of your quest begin smoothly?
