Chapter 41 by SingingLark SingingLark

Will Liandra try to tie Gwen and Kendal?

Is she jealous?

"Greetings, miladies" The Emperor called for their attention, as he came closer. His attire was a masculine version of Kendra's leather vestments, to the point of being equally revealing. Liandra had flashes of the previous night passionate encounter, foremost the outstanding conclusion, and for a moment was stuck speechless. Kendra didn't notice her hesitation, and naturally greeted her Emperor.

"Your highness." She stood, to properly bow to him, a gesture followed by the two Luxians. "Baroness Blackhand" he greeted her first, "Princess Liandra... and of course, milady Gwen. I see you decided to harbor all the visiting beauties from our neighbour kingdom, Kendra." Kendal said while smiling to his baroness. "As if merely housing one of them wasn't enough."

"It was my idea to observe the beauty of Nightglow, and I suppose even far from our Kingdom Gwen felt obliged to humor her princess." Liandra spoke with the inflection used at court, a formal tone that contrasted heavily with the levity the friends were using just moments before.

"Your highness is too kind, when it was her mercy to save me from dreadful parental scrutiny" Gwen followed suit, and she kept her eyes lowered, out of respect.

"I appear to have spoiled the evening... the tone that I heard was of laughter and merriness. Now it feels as if i am holding court. I should depart."

"But how could you expect any different, Kendal? if you were only to join us, share wine and break bread, then we would be obliged to be more informal and friendly. Before that..." Liandra gestured her invitation, while both of her friends seemed more nervous.

"... you already called me Kendal." He remarked, and Liandra laughed "I did, didn't I? but the invitation stands. Unless the Emperor has something better to do?" But he readily agreed "I couldn't fathom a better evening than with your company"

He joined them, with high praises for the wine and pastry. Gwen handed him a goblet, and Liandra didn't know what to feel when she noticed their subtle touch. Gwen cheeks were a little rosy, and she was avoiding eye contacts.

"There aren't as many stars out as yesterday" Liandra eventually remarked, with some sadness.

"True, yesterday was a night to remember." But Liandra missed the innuendo.

"I remember a song I heard in Luxius, about a couple in love trying to fight the break of Dawn. Nocteria is a land where their night need never end." Kendra's tone was forlorn, and Liandra held her hand. She felt warm, and soft.

"Sounds lovely, I wish I could hear it" Kendal remarked.
"If you wish." Gwen offered. "but need my lyre"
Kendal thanked the offer, but refused to let her get away for even those sparse moments, instead he crafted the instrument out of shadows. It was horribly out of tune, but together they were able to fine tune it, and Gwen graced their company with the love song.
"Thank you... but Princess Liandra is even better, she trained under Master Ludo." Liandra didn't escape the instrument, but insisted on Gwen singing. They did well together, and it was only when the instrument vanished in thin air that they had to stop.

"It is about to rain... we should get inside, this is going to be a tempest" Kendal said with a frown, Liandra suspected it wasn't the entire truth, and Kendra promptly agreed. "Yes. We should make haste, these events can be... very sudden" And as if on cue, a thunder echoed through them.

Haste inside? or stay out?
