Chapter 16 by mrdarcydoms mrdarcydoms

The group split up after breakfast to cover more ground. Barret took the lower streets and the taverns, asking careful questions of traders and travelers. Tifa and Aerith moved through the market stalls, listening for rumors. Cloud stayed near the inn at first, then walked the quieter residential lanes where older residents sat on stoops and watched the day pass.

By midday they reconvened in their upper room. The information was thin but consistent. Strangers in black cloaks had passed through Kalm in recent weeks. Some spoke of a tall man with silver hair seen near the old roads leading north. Others mentioned unusual mako activity in the mountains beyond the town. No one used the name Sephiroth out loud, but the descriptions matched.

Barret closed the door and leaned against it. “It’s enough to move on. But before we do, I want the full story. Cloud. You knew him. You were there when it started. Tell us what happened in Nibelheim.”

Cloud sat on the edge of the bed, Buster Sword resting against the wall beside him. He was silent for a long moment. Then he began.

He spoke of the mission to the Nibelheim reactor. Sephiroth leading the team. The mountain path. The way the SOLDIER First Class moved through the monsters without effort. He described the reactor itself, the pods, the failed experiments, the moment Sephiroth read the files and learned the truth about his origins. The change in his eyes. The silence that followed.

Cloud told them about the return to the village. The fire. Sephiroth walking through the flames without urgency. The bodies in the streets. Tifa’s father. The confrontation at the reactor. The sword through the midsection. The fall into the mako below.

He left out nothing of the sequence, but his voice stayed flat, almost distant, as if the memories belonged to someone else. When he finished the room was quiet.

Tifa sat with her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She had lived through part of that night. Hearing it laid out in order still landed heavy. Aerith watched Cloud with careful attention, noting the places where his account seemed to skip or blur. Barret stared at the floor, jaw tight.

“So he’s alive,” Barret said at last. “Or something that looks like him is walking around in a black cloak, leaving bodies and mako trails. And we’re going to follow it.”

Cloud nodded once. “We follow it.”

They spent the rest of the afternoon preparing. Supplies were bought in small amounts from different shops to avoid notice. Maps of the northern routes were studied. The innkeeper was paid for another night in case they needed to return, though none of them expected to.

As evening settled over Kalm the four of them stood at the window looking north. The mountains rose dark against the sky. Somewhere beyond them the trail continued. Sephiroth’s shadow stretched ahead. The next steps would take them out of the quiet town and back into the open danger of the world Shinra had shaped.

Barret checked the charge on his gun-arm. Tifa secured her gloves. Aerith adjusted the ribbon in her hair. Cloud lifted the Buster Sword and settled it across his back.

They left the inn after full dark, moving on foot toward the northern road. Kalm’s lights faded behind them. The path toward the next piece of the truth lay open and empty under the stars.
