Investigate the Plane

You decide to check out the noises you heard earlier in the cargo hold. You walk pass the rooms where the sexy females are, and you push open the door to the cargo hold. It looks much the same as before, but you still walk cautiously in.
Looking from side to side, you once again hear the scratching noises. It is much fainter than before, but you are fairly sure it’s only due to the fact that you no longer have super-hearing abilities.
You approach a large metal crate that appears to be bolted to the ground, a specialized storage mechanism of sorts that was built into the plane. The sounds seem to be produced from inside this crate, a consistent ‘scritch-scratch’ noise that reminds you of fingernails on chalkboards or a cat clawing at metal…
Staring at the crate, you really are lost for words. Without your powers, you have no way of finding out what’s inside. If it turns out to be dangerous, you could be screwed, but then again, you are awfully curious about what’s inside. What if it’s a timer based mechanism that sets off a bomb, just in case something like what happened, did happen?
You sit in front of the crate, thinking for a while, before you come to a conclusion. There really is only one way forward… but what is it?
Do you open the crate now, wait for you powers, or screw the box and land the plane?
