Mangler Max
Would you bring your wife?
You have been married long enough to understand that a successful marriage depends upon a certain allowance for secrets. You love your wife and enjoy your life together. You have never considered yourself the sort of man who keeps dangerous secrets. Nevertheless, you occasionally find yourself exploring corners of the internet that you would rather not explain to her over breakfast.
You are not necessarily doing anything wrong. You are simply curious about things that exist outside the comfortable boundaries of your ordinary life. You enjoy discovering that the world is considerably darker and more dangerous than most people realize. That curiosity is how you first learn of Mangler Max.
You are browsing an obscure discussion forum devoted to underground nightlife, alternative fashion, and the elaborate theatrical performances staged in certain private clubs. You arrived there through a series of entirely unrelated searches, beginning with a photograph of an abandoned industrial building and ending, somehow, with a discussion about the more extravagant establishments operating beneath the respectable surfaces of European cities. You have heard of such places, of course, everybody has.
They are the sort of clubs that appear in sensational documentaries, where the patrons wear black leather and rubber, the lighting is permanently crimson, and enormous steel cages hang from the ceiling. You have always assumed that the reality is considerably less exciting than the photographs suggest. Most of the people involved probably have perfectly ordinary jobs, mortgages, and families, and their elaborate costumes are simply a way of escaping the monotony of everyday life. Still, there is something fascinating about the atmosphere.
You find yourself studying photographs of converted warehouses filled with industrial equipment, heavy chains, and masked figures whose identities are completely concealed. The costumes range from the ridiculous to the genuinely disturbing. You occasionally wonder what sort of person spends an evening dressed like an executioner. You have no intention of attending one of these establishments yourself. You are simply looking. At least, that is what you tell yourself.
The discussion that introduces you to Mangler Max concerns the most intimidating performers ever encountered on the underground club circuit. Most of the contributors describe elaborate costumes or particularly convincing theatrical acts. There are photographs of towering men in medieval armor, women wearing elaborate mechanical masks, and performers whose appearances seem borrowed from the more disturbing works of Clive Barker.
Then somebody mentions a name you have never heard before, Mangler Max. The comment is buried halfway down the page, between an argument about German industrial music and a discussion of the safety regulations governing private performances. The contributor describes Max as the most frightening figure he has ever encountered, although he offers almost nothing in the way of explanation.
Another participant replies that Max is nothing more than an urban legend. A third insists that he has seen him. The argument continues for several pages, gradually becoming more hostile as contributors challenge one another to produce photographs or identify the clubs where this mysterious character supposedly appears. Some claim that Max operates exclusively in Europe, while others insist that he has been spotted in American cities.
One contributor describes an encounter in Berlin, another mentions New Orleans, and a third refers vaguely to a private gathering somewhere outside Las Vegas. You would ordinarily dismiss the entire conversation as internet nonsense, but one particular detail catches your attention. Everybody seems to agree on what Mangler Max looks like.
He is described as an enormous, grotesquely heavy man dressed entirely in black rubber, with a thick leather apron covering his massive stomach. His hands are concealed inside heavy industrial gloves, and his face is hidden behind an old-fashioned gas mask with round glass eyepieces and a projecting respirator. There is apparently not a single inch of exposed skin anywhere on his body.
One contributor claims that Max stands nearly seven feet tall. Another insists that he is closer to six feet, but weighs more than four hundred pounds. Several describe his forearms as being almost unnaturally thick, with fists large enough to completely engulf another man's hand. You find the descriptions faintly amusing. They sound like somebody has combined Leatherface with an industrial nightclub bouncer and given the resulting monstrosity a ridiculous stage name. Nevertheless, you type Mangler Max into the search bar.
