Chapter One—

On a nearby galaxy, 50,000 light years away, which isn’t that many light years in a cosmic sense, there was a collection of civilizations who referred to themselves only as the TukTuk System. That was just about the only thing they ever managed to agree on.

In that sense, and in many others, they’re very similar to the civilization of Earth. They are humans (a species that has a habit of developing all over the universe), there are dogs, and a grand number of humanoid aliens. There are also aliens with four legs, but it seems nature only likes to pass on intelligence to species with two legs, perhaps because those species are the only ones that can go out for walks, a key feature in thinking.

The citizens of the TukTuk System also have a government that doesn’t listen to them or care to listen to them, as it has fallen under the control of a collection of wealthy companies who all agree in unison to never say that they are in charge.

They also eat three meals a day, though they never have to drink, and of course, they have television.

Before I go any further, allow me to introduce myself. I am Gerbil. Yes, I share a name with the furry, rat-like companions you have on Earth, but where I’m from, it is a very royal and wise name. At least it was until we also discovered gerbils. Now I also get made fun of at school. I am what’s called a storyteller. It is our job to collect stories from across the vast ocean of existence, catalogue the best of them, and redistribute them to you, the people, for a minimal subscription fee of Chromius, I believe your people refer to it as time. We feed on that, so thank you.

But we’re not here to focus on me. In fact, unless it is vitally important, I will do what any great storyteller would do and I will ask that you forget about me as you read on. Maybe I’ll insert a couple of thoughts here and there, share a few political opinions, rustle some feathers, or include a tidbit about my life.

After all, why should the people that we tell stories about be the only ones who are highlighted? We matter too. I know you aren’t here right now, but I just got a huge applause for that. We fill these things like a live podcast, by the way. I’m in a bar right now.

Anyways, I probably lost a few of you already, but for those lucky enough to stick around, you are in for a treat, for TukTuk isn’t like any old system in this universe. No, this system is closest to the heart of the creator of everything. They have no idea this is the case, and they actually won’t know for another 50 billion years from where our story takes place. But! The fact that they are so near the heart means that elements of that divinity occasionally pour out into the population in the form of energy, which can be used to control the environment, physics, and even the souls and minds of others.

Do I have your attention now? Good.

There used to be an ancient order that specialized in channeling this divine energy, which they refer to as the Echo. They were soldiers who were placed in positions of high power to keep the peace, but when the Uprising happened and the Empress (a real beautiful woman) took over, she made her soldiers, whom she calls Nepharites (a band of equally beautiful women), destroy the Ancient Order until the Echo of good was silenced across the system and the Order of Peace rose.

Since then, alongside the contributions of large corporations, civilization has run amok with no one to defend it. Until now.

Taz Submarine (it’s a perfectly normal name where he’s from) is 27 years old. He’s a mechanic who makes his money working on Space Jumpers. This guy’s always been kind of an asshole. From the moment he was born, he was okay with that because the kids on Tartarus are basically born underneath a Jumper with their overalls on.

Tartarus itself is less of a planet and more of a cosmic junkyard. Imagine a sphere of rusted rebar, grease-slicked titanium, and exhaust fume. The entire crust is an endless, overlapping hive of mechanical landing bays suspended over a bottomless abyss. It’s a miserable, metallic grid designed entirely to keep ships moving and working-class grunts sweating under the corporate heel, all while looking out into a void that doesn’t care if they drop off the edge.

There are two possibilities for a mechanic there. You’re either a nice guy who shoots himself in the head by the time he turns 40 years old, or you’re a quiet guy who does the work and then dies the moment he’s old enough to retire. Most mechanics choose the not-so-secret third option: turn the whole thing into a joke, because if nothing matters, then who cares that people are being enslaved, or that 60% of their wages are going to fund a military operation, or the fact that they work on Jumpers when none of them will ever ride in one. None of it matters ’cause it’s all just a joke.

“Hey, Submarine! Who do you think’s going to win the election?” Yin called out from the adjacent platform, leaning over a half-dismantled plasma manifold. He was wiping grease onto his shirt.

Taz didn’t look up from his wrench. “The same person who’s won every year since they took over, The Empress.”

“The Whales?” Yin snorted, spitting a glob of synthetic tobacco into the abyss. “They haven’t won a political race since the Empress took the throne. They’re as old as my grandmother’s joints.”

It was so loud, that Taz didn’t even bother to correct him, “Yeah, man. That’s what I said.” But as he walked back to his station, he whispered to himself “fucking jackass.”

This planet was mostly uninhabitable, but certain areas of it had been turned into quick service stations for gasoline, tech repairs, and this specific section, which was about the size of Florida, featured a bunch of mechanic bases where people could dock their ships to have them fixed or inspected. They were all layered one over the other in a completely open environment with the mechanics’ platforms attached to elevator pillars, which brought them from the housing units up to their desired mechanical bay. If someone didn’t show up to work, their home would be inspected, and if they were dead or missing, their job would be replaced by someone in the academies located underground.

The person pulling up right now. Was Jrek, and Jrek was riding in an old jumper, but she was beautifully taken care of. Though jre himself wasn’t as he slumped out of his Jumper, almost falling into the abyss next to the mechanical bay. He was an old man with long gray hair that reached past his shoulders and a mustache. That was just about the only part of him you could see, as the rest of his body was covered by a cloak. “Holy Turks, man, that was rough. Remind me to never bet a Daquilla on a Blazlak to finish over a Jungar.” Don’t worry, almost none of those words made sense to Taz either.

“What seems to be the problem?” He didn’t stop playing with his wrench, tossing it into the air and catching it behind his back. Even when it seemed like he was about to drop it, the kid would luck out.

“No problem here.” The old man fixed his gaze onto the mechanic. Those who are trained in the ability to see the Echo must still meditate for about 10 minutes before they are able to see the aura of power surrounding that individual like a flame around the wick of a candle. But, in this case, with no meditation and hungover from the night before, Jrek found himself face-to-face with the second person in his 200-year life to ever have the Echo surround them so clearly that it wasn’t just visible, it had a smell to it, like fresh-picked strawberries. “Young man, have you heard of the Echo?”

The shaggy, brown-haired kid scoffed. “Look, if you’re just here to sell your religion to me, just leave your pamphlet so I have something to wipe my ass with and stop wasting everyone’s time.”

The old man ignored him completely. “If the Empress were to find out that you were here, she would’ve already sent for you to be killed.” In an instant, the old man’s hangover cleared, his eyes brightened, and his sharp senses returned to him. “The Echo does everything for a reason. If I’m here…” In one inhuman step, he tackled Taz to the ground just as a laser flew past. “We need to go. Your life is in danger.”

Taz had fear in his eyes. He looked at the old man, then at the burnt spot behind him where the laser had hit, which was still smoking. He hit the old man with his wrench and took off running. “Wait!” the old man shouted, holding his head to make sure he wasn’t bleeding before taking off after him. He pulled out his responder so that he could communicate with his ship and said, “Firebolt, take off and wait for my signal!”

The red and black ship’s engines ignited and it took off towards the sky, weaving between the other ships, dodging and leaving the mechanical station.

As soon as Taz and Jrek were out of sight, a beautiful woman descended from one of the higher platforms. She had blue skin and white hair that flowed down beautifully. She was wearing a tight black jumpsuit which outlined her large ass and was zipped down just enough that the top of her generous tits were spilling out. She placed her sniper rifle onto a magnetic holster attached to her back and took off after the two men.

Taz was running for his life, something he never thought he would do. He traversed the narrow pathways which led from mechanic bay to mechanic bay, running around the circular walkways which surrounded the elevators, but the old man was gaining on him, so he made his way onto a bay where a green fish-man was fixing up a space cycle. “Hey! Get off my platform, buddy.”

“Planning on it,” Taz said as he took a running start and jumped off the platform, landing on another abandoned platform 20 feet down with a thud. There was no way the old man could follow that. He stood up and found his way to the elevator, which opened quickly, but when he looked up, he was surprised to see that the old man was walking casually towards him. “How!?” He slammed on the button to close the door faster since the old man was still some decent distance away, but when it was about halfway closed, it just stopped, and then with a creaking sound began to open again. “Work, you damn thing!” He tried to force it close, but his strength wasn’t enough.

“Your strength won’t be enough,” Jrek said, “and if you are to survive this, which I think it is imperative you do, you should start listening to me.” His hand was up and pointed towards the door, as if it was his abilities which were keeping it open.

“Bullshit. You got lucky.” Taz continued to slam on the buttons, but wasn’t having any luck. He was almost crying now.

“I’m Jrek. What’s your name?”

Taz, realizing he wasn’t going anywhere, answered the question. “I’m Taz Submarine. And I’m just a mechanic. I didn’t mean to get mixed up in anything. I wanna go back to my stupid life. I don’t wanna do this.” He looked over the edge and contemplated the jump.

Jrek knew that the young man in front of him was no hero, but with the right training, he could be their greatest chance. “The power I was telling you about earlier, the Echo, you have it. And if channeled correctly, you don’t have to do this anymore. You could be the most powerful being in the universe, but you have to trust me.”

“I don’t, okay? I don’t believe in anything. You got lucky with the door, or maybe you have some technological advancements or something, but I’m not gonna believe in some bullshit just ’cause you told me. That’s how we all wound up in this mess anyway. People believing things that don’t make sense.”

“I was a member of the Ancient Order. If you let me teach you, it will make everything make sense. All those little things in your life that you could never explain.”

Suddenly a scream was heard as the green lizard guy from earlier was thrown off his platform, and the sniper jumped onto theirs, rolling into a stand with her rifle in hand in the same motion. “Get out of the way, old man! And you, hands up!” She had a husky voice. The old man turned with his hands up, and Taz raised them too. “By the demands of the Order of Peace, I, Hope Tarxen Taryen, grant you, Taz Submarine, the right to death.”

Hope was a new recruit of the Order of Peace. She had been in their international academy for a long time and this mission to kill a civilian mechanic on a useless planet was her testing ground to show what she could do. She had top marks in school, never failed to pull the trigger when the time mattered in any emotional attachment test. This would be easy.

She lifted her gun and cocked it. Taz closed his eyes. At least he was dying to a sexy lady. It’s better than how he thought he would die.

But after a moment, nothing happened. Then another moment. Then another. Finally, Taz opened his eyes to see her moving her gun down and re-holstering it onto her back.

“Fuck,” she said, “oh my God.” She started squirming before playing with her tits. “Both of you stay right there for now, I have to handle something.” She unzipped her jumpsuit to reveal her blue tits. They were very large and rested across her chest, and she continued to undo the jumpsuit until her pussy was available and she quickly started fingering herself right there on the elevator pathway. It was cleanly shaven.

“How?” He looked to the side and saw Jrek was sweating profusely as his hand worked in a continual circle in the direction of the beautiful woman who had two fingers in her mouth and two fingers in her pussy as she fucked herself senselessly with her jumpsuit piled around her knees.

Her thighs trembled violently, locking up as the sheer force of the compulsion short-circuited her logic. Every tactical thought was instantly incinerated, replaced by a suffocating need to fill her holes. Her blue flesh flushed a deep indigo, slick with sudden sweat that made her white hair stick to her cheeks. She groaned, a harsh, ragged sound, as her fingers buried themselves inside her clit with a frantic, punishing rhythm. Her mind screamed at her to stop, to pick up the rifle, but the something twisted her desire until reaching a screaming orgasm became a necessity. Her knees buckled completely, hitting the cold metal deck as her hips arched upward, totally enslaved by the phantom pleasure tearing through her body.

Finally, he put his hand down. “That won’t hold her long.” He took out a communication device and said, “Firebolt, make your entrance.”

The ship flew down beside them as quick as a whistle, and Jrek stumbled in. His hangover, his exhaustion, and the new drugs he had taken since he woke up were starting to catch up to him. “A simple trick, but a tiring one. It won’t hold her long. Are you getting in, or are you taking your chances with her?”

Taz hesitated. Not because he was having doubts, those had been expelled, but because he was so turned on watching her blue titties shake back and forth as she seemed determined to fill both her holes as much as possible with saliva dripping out of the side of her mouth. He took one last mental picture and jumped into the ship. After so many years of fixing them, he hadn’t expected a Jumper to be so comfortable. “Let’s do this, old man.”

And the Firebolt burst off into deep space.
