Maid for Each Other

Mireyah cleans rooms early that morning, moving quickly from door to door with an armful of fresh towels pressed against her chest. In her haste to finish her assignments before noon, she forgets the most basic rule of hotel housekeeping.

She doesn’t knock.

Balancing the towels so high they partially block her vision, she nudges open the door to Room 217 and steps inside.

“Housekeeping—”

The words die in her throat.

I’m lying naked in bed with the television on, completely uncovered and entirely unbothered by the intrusion. I glance over at her calmly.

“Knock much?” I ask.

The towels slip from her arms and tumble onto the carpet.

Her dark brown eyes widen in horror as realization crashes over her. A deep crimson blush floods her olive complexion almost instantly.

“Ay Dios mío,” she whispers. “I am so, so sorry.”

She immediately turns toward the door, trembling visibly.

“I’ll leave right now. Please… please don’t tell the front desk.”

Her voice shakes with panic. She twists her fingers together nervously, the fabric of her black satin maid skirt wrinkling between her hands.

“It’s only my first week,” she says. “I really need this job.”

I lean back against the pillows, watching her carefully.

Honestly, I should probably let it go. I didn’t hang the “Do Not Disturb” sign outside my room, and technically she made an honest mistake.

Still, the sight of this flustered young maid standing frozen in embarrassment is difficult to ignore.

“Miss,” I say evenly, “walking into a guest’s room without knocking is pretty unacceptable.”

Mireyah swallows hard.

“I know,” she says quickly. “I know it was wrong.”

“I really don’t want to report you,” I continue, “but I probably should. What’s your name?”

“Mireyah,” she answers immediately. “Mireyah Flores.”

She lowers her gaze toward the floor, unable to look directly at me.

“I just started here last week,” she says softly. “I swear I’m usually more professional than this.”

Despite herself, she remains rooted in place near the door, torn between fleeing the room and staying long enough to plead her case.

“Please,” she says again. “This job means everything to me.”

I study her for a moment.

She looks young, though not immature—nervous rather than careless. Her dark hair is braided neatly against her shoulders beneath the frilled white maid headdress. The black-and-white uniform is immaculate despite her obvious distress.

“How old are you, Mireyah?”

She hesitates briefly before answering.

“I turned twenty-one a few months ago.”

Her blush deepens.

“And before you ask,” she adds quickly, “yes, I know I violated your privacy. I should have knocked first.”

There’s sincerity in her voice now, not just panic.

“I’m paying my way through college,” she continues quietly. “I want to become a lawyer someday. This job helps cover tuition and rent.”

I gesture toward the edge of the bed.

“Come sit down for a second. Relax.”

Mireyah stiffens immediately.

“I—here?”

“I’m not going to touch you,” I say. “You look like you’re about to faint.”

After a long pause, she slowly approaches the bed and perches herself carefully on the very edge of the mattress, leaving as much space between us as possible. Her posture remains rigid with anxiety.

“Thank you for listening to me,” she says softly.

Up close, I can see the faint tremble in her hands. She keeps her eyes fixed anywhere except directly on me.

“You’re very nervous,” I observe.

“I have good reason to be,” she replies with a weak laugh.
