Interview
Bobby leans forward, elbows on the desk, fingers steepled. “Tell me your story, Melissa. Background, dreams, résumé—go.”
You launch in, voice steady, threading together small-town theater, the indie short that got into Slamdance, the callback you almost landed for a Netflix pilot. You sell the hustle without overselling the polish. For a minute, it feels good—like you belong.
Then he shakes his head. “I don’t think you’ve got what it takes to survive out here.”
The words hit like cold water. Your pulse spikes; the room tilts a degree. You swallow, but the disappointment leaks across your face before you can cage it.
He softens—just a fraction. “Talent’s not the issue. This town eats nice girls for breakfast. You ready for that?”
You nod, throat tight. He’s right, and the truth stings worse than the rejection. Silence pools. You feel the moment teetering—walk out crushed, or push back. You choose.
“Bobby,” you say, meeting his eyes, “I didn’t fly two thousand miles to fold at the first ‘no.’ Tell me what I did wrong. Coach me. I’ll fix it.”
His eyebrows lift; the practiced mask slips. He exhales through his nose, studies you like he’s recalculating odds. “Huh. Most kids your age start crying or pitching a script they wrote in tenth grade.”
He flips open your headshot, taps a pen against it. “First, lose the apology in your voice when you say ‘small-town.’ Own it—small towns breed hunger. Second, that Netflix near-miss? Don’t bury the lede; lead with it, then pivot to what you learned. Casting directors smell fear; give them curiosity instead.”
Does it go further what advice do you get
