Interlude Five -- The Bottom of Tokyo Bay

How long the dragon had been been buried beneath the mud at the bottom of Tokyo Bay, no body knew. Not even the dragon.

But when it awoke and burst out of its muddy grave, every fish in the area turned tail and swam like lightning toward the distant horizon. Every deep-sea diver in the vicinity abandoned their quests and risked the bends in an effort to get out of the creature's path. Even the captains of local naval submarines suddenly felt an urgent need to go out to sea just to escape the monster's reach.

The locals called the dragon Gojira; the Americans, of course, knew of him by a different name.

Yet the one word that kept echoing in the dragon's head was a word that the dragon had never heard before. The word Sunnydale.

Someone -- or something -- wanted the dragon to go there. That same someone urged the dragon to go there. Apparently this Sunnydale was a fabulous city located on the other side of the Pacific Ocean. A city that needed to be destroyed the way only a dragon like Gojira could destroy a city.

Yet the dragon did not feel like going such a long way just to destroy a city. There was a city closer to home that the dragon preferred to destroy. A city that the dragon had already destroyed many times.

So, despite all the words echoing in the dragon's head that had been delivered by some entity that called itself the First Evil, the dragon known to the Americans as Godzilla chose to turn its back on Sunnydale and instead turned in the direction of its favorite target. Tokyo...
