Incident reports

Thinking the meeting was over, you were about to turn and leave, but as the Captain continued, you quickly stood back at attention.

"I was also notified of a few incidents that transpired during yesterday's tour," said the Captain. "It appears we have you to thank for identifying the situation in waste processing before it escalated further."

"During the tour, I happened to notice some strange readings in that area and notified the engineers," you explained. "They did the rest. By the way, have there been any updates regarding 6T9? She was in there when we lost communication. I hope she's alright."

"From the reports I've seen, it appears that three synthetics were in the waste processing area when this happened," disclosed the Captain. "6T9 and another suffered significant damage but were recovered. The third suffered irreparable damage."

"There also appear to have been a pair of incidents involving water dispensers which required clean-up. Would you care to explain those?" asked the Captain.

"Well, the first one was an accident," you began. "I attempted to drink directly from a dispenser, but I used too high of a flow setting. As for the second incident, that was an unfortunate result of an encounter with some Cunis that ambushed me. I used the water dispenser to drive them off. Afterward, I helped with the clean-up effort. Since then, I've reconciled the situation with three of them, and hope to reach a similar agreement with the fourth. There should be no further incidents like this."

"Water is a limited resource on board the Starpoint. Fortunately, the water reclamation system is highly efficient, but it should not be used recklessly. Since this was your first day using the system, and the Cunis' actions appear to have been a contributing factor, I will consider this matter resolved." Then he paused briefly before asking, "Was there anything else you wanted to discuss?"

"I did have a couple questions related to the Cunis. Is there a reason why the aren't allowed to use the MatGen? Also, why are they only provided with a single outfit?"

"At one time, the Cunis were allowed to use the MatGen, but there were several incidents where they wasted resources for duplicate, unnecessary or frivolous items, and their access was revoked. Item creation for the Cunis is now handled by request. Regarding their clothing, the material features active fiber technology which is cut and tear resistant, stain proof, and it provides odor control, temperature control and self-cleaning. As a result, a single outfit is all they need. If not for still clinging to cultural beliefs, they would not need to wear any."

"During the second water incident, the Cuni garments were damaged by the **** of the spray. I have replaced outfits for three of them so far, and they seemed extremely happy to wear something different. I suspect they've grown very bored of wearing the same outfits every day."

The Captain paused for several moments before responding. "The Grey stopped wearing clothing so long ago that we tend to discount and forget the intangible benefits of clothing, and instead we focus solely on their measured costs and efficiency. If the Cunis are not satisfied with their current outfits, that may constitute a previously unrecognized morale issue. Provided that creation of their new outfits doesn't adversely impact the ship's resources, providing them with new garments is acceptable. Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed?

"For now, allowing each of them one new garment is probably sufficient. That should provide a morale boost while also limiting the resources needed. If the existing garments can be recycled, that could further minimize the resource impact. As for the style, thus far I have been using a simple design based on Earth fashions, but it may be possible for me to create some additional choices after I become more familiar with the MatGen capabilities."

The Captain brought up a console and checked something. "Based on your MatGen usage so far, the resource impact appears rather limited. Offering garments to the remaining Cuni with similar resource requirements is acceptable."
