You let uncomfortable silence hang in the air before continuing.

“Did you mean any of it?”

He looks up, confused. “Did I what?”

“Did you mean any of the things you wrote?”

You didn’t think it possible, but his face grows even redder. You inwardly chuckle and think you’d better end this soon, or the boy is going to burst a blood vessel.

You maintain a stern demeanor. “Oh, so you’re saying you think I’m ugly?”

“No!” came his immediate response, quickly followed by, “I mean — That’s not not what I — That is —“ He looks at you with a deer-in-the-headlights expression. “I don’t know what you want me to say!”

You stand and slowly walk to his side of the desk and lean against it, positioning yourself mere inches in front of him.
