Chapter 4
by JennCarcione
Do you enter his car?
I get in the car
I do as told. I sit in the passenger seat, buckle my belt any comply. He quickly sits down, peels out of the parking lot, and drive away.
After several minutes of driving way faster then I am comfortable, including several extremely sharp turns, Tyrone slows down and begins texting people. As he does so, he keeps looking over at me. I am still shocked, confused and nervous about whatever just happened, and I sit there silently. After a few minutes, I ask Tyrone, "Where are we going?" Tyrone responds, "I can't talk about it now."
This is wild. I'm 18, it's my first night in college and I'm somehow in trouble, alone in the car with a strange black man going god knows where. This is too much. I look at Tyrone and tell him, "Stop the car now" in the most assertive voice you can muster, although fear and hesitation must have been evident. Tyrone looks at me nervously, slowly pulls over to the side of the road and says, "Baby doll, I'm so sorry. That must have been traumatic for you. I didn't mean to hurt you or make you scared. I'm sorry if you felt intimidated by my actions, I only want to protect you. I wanted to get you out of that dangerous area but I'll take you wherever you want to go, I just want you to feel safe and comfortable."
Do you leave the car or stay?
