Chapter 27 - I am fine
Torin moved through the dark house like a shadow that had learned how to walk. Every step was careful. Floorboards that wanted to complain stayed quiet under his weight. He kept one hand near the knife at his belt and the other open, ready.
The sounds pulled him forward.
At first they were only soft, wet noises mixed with breathing. Then the hallway narrowed, and the noises sharpened. A low groan with a sharp inhale. The slap of skin hitting skin in a steady, hungry rhythm. Not pain nor fear; it was pleasure.
Thick, messy, and loud enough to fill the rooms.
His shoulders dropped a little. The tightness in his neck eased. Whatever was happening behind that door was not an ambush.
He reached the doorway and stopped.
The room was lit by one weak lamp in the corner. Four bodies moved inside it. Two young men and women. Clothes half-ripped, pants and underwear shoved down around their thighs or kicked off completely. Skin shone with sweat. The air smelled of sex and heat and something sharp, like someone had been at it for a while.
One couple was on the floor. The man had the woman on her hands and knees, driving into her hard enough that her breasts swung and her mouth stayed open in a continuous broken sound. Her fingers clawed at the rug. Every thrust pushed a wet noise out of her that mixed with the man’s low grunts. He held her hips like he was trying to break them, and she pushed back just as hard, chasing it.
Against the wall, the second pair was worse. The other woman had her legs locked around the second man’s waist. He held her up with pure force, slamming her into the plaster so hard the picture frames rattled. Her head tipped back. Her mouth was open. Spit shone on her chin. She kept saying the same half-word over and over, something filthy and desperate, while her nails dug red lines down his back. He answered with deeper thrusts and a sound that was almost a snarl.
No one noticed Torin at first.
He stood in the doorway and watched. For one short second, his eyes went wide. The heat of it hit him in the chest. The pure animal need of it. The way their bodies moved without shame, without care, just need and friction and the wet slap of flesh.
Then the second passed.
His face closed again. Eyes turned flat and cold. The moment of surprise died like a candle pinched out between two fingers.
He stayed silent and still. He watched them keep fucking like the world outside the room did not exist.
He slammed the baseball bat against the wall. The sharp crack echoed. “This is private property. Get out, please.”
The four froze.
Scrambling, the men yanked their pants up. The girls stumbled backward, trying to cover themselves.
One of the men stepped forward, his face twisted with anger. He kept glancing at the girls behind him, clearly frustrated that the situation had suddenly fallen apart. “Who the hell are you? What are you doing in here?”
Torin kept the bat lowered at his side. “This is my house. You need to get dressed and leave.”
The man gave a bitter laugh. “Your house? You just walk in here and start giving us orders?”
“I don't care what you were doing here. You're trespassing.”
Before the man could answer, one of the girls behind him snapped, “This is exactly why I told you this was a stupid idea. You couldn't even afford a hotel, so you brought us here and promised nobody would come. Now look at us.”
The man's face darkened. “Can you shut up?”
“No. You said you had everything handled, and now we're getting thrown out because you couldn't even check whether the owner still came here.”
He turned back toward Torin, his embarrassment quickly becoming anger. “This is because of you.”
Torin stared at him. “You broke into my house.”
“You think you're better than me?”
“I think you should leave while you still can.”
The man's jaw tightened. He stepped closer, his fists curling at his sides. “You don't get to talk to me like that.”
Torin didn't move. “Then leave.”
The man suddenly swung.
Torin stepped back just enough to avoid the punch and brought the bat around in a short, brutal arc. It struck the side of the man's face with a sharp crack, sending him stumbling sideways before he collapsed to the floor.
The room went silent.
Torin looked down at him, then turned toward the second man, who had gone pale.
“Take him and get out.”
The man immediately moved to help his friend.
Torin's eyes shifted toward the girl who had been arguing with them. “You wanted a hotel. Go find one.”
She swallowed and nodded quickly. “We're leaving.”
“Good. Then don't make me ask twice.”
The second man dragged his injured friend toward the door while the girl hurried after them. Within seconds, all three had disappeared outside.
Leena had watched them emerge from the car. The sight of one man stumbling with blood running down his face made her stomach drop. She threw the door open and rushed inside.
“Torin!”
She found him standing in the middle of the room, the baseball bat still in his hand. Furniture had been knocked out of place, and there was blood on the floor.
Leena immediately hurried toward him, looking over his face and arms. “Are you hurt? What happened? I heard shouting, and then those people came running out. Torin, did they hurt you?”
“I'm fine.”
“You don't look fine.”
“They're the ones who aren't fine.”
Her eyes moved toward the doorway. “You hit him with the bat, didn't you?”
“He tried to hit me first.”
“That doesn't make me feel any better.”
Torin lowered the bat and set it against the wall. When he turned back, Leena was still standing close to him, breathing hard from running inside.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Torin reached out, wrapped an arm around her waist, and pulled her against him.
Leena stiffened, surprised by the sudden movement. “Torin, what are you doing?”
He looked down at her and held her there for a moment. “I'm fine,” he said quietly.
She stared up at him before letting out a frustrated breath. “You could have told me that before I nearly had a heart attack.”
A faint smile appeared on his face. “I know.”
