Human Human Fruit Model: Goddess Artemis

Author’s Note: This chapter cover’s Luffy’s childhood pre-adventure, and as such will cover no intentionally or explicitly sexual scenes.

Luffy had an odd childhood growing up. His first real conscious thoughts were from his time spent in Fuschia Village. He lived alone, as his grandpa was never around, but he was well looked after by the rest of the village. In particular, he spent a lot of time around Makino’s bar. His grandpa visited occasionally, but didn’t really do anything but toss Luffy into mortal peril so he could become strong and then leave again. Still, Luffy was happy. With all the free time he had on his hands, he explored the surrounding forests, befriended some of the animals, and had a great time!

Things began to change when Shanks roamed into the village. Although he wasn’t the first pirate Luffy had met in Makino’s bar, he was by far the coolest! If only he would let Luffy join his crew. Shanks hung around the East Blue (that was the sea they were in, or so Luffy was told) for several months, during which they would regularly stop by Fuschia, sometimes for weeks at a time. Their favorite spot on the island was the bar, so Luffy would often meet them there, where Shanks retailed him with tales off his great adventures.

Luffy wasn’t as impressed when he actually first saw Shanks in action though. Although, perhaps that was because Shanks wasn’t in action. When the mountain bandits came around lunchtime and trashed the place, taking action seemed to be the last thing Shanks had in mind. It enraged Luffy to see his idol failing to live up to the high standards Luffy held. Angry and hungry, Luffy decided to take his mind off the matter by biting into the nearest edible thing-an odd silver fruit Shanks had brought in a treasure chest. It tasted worse than the rock Luffy had once tried to eat, but it kept him distracted, so he finished it off.

When the Red-Haired pirates found out what Luffy had eaten they first demanded he spit it out, before pestering him about anything they may have changed, but Luffy felt the same, so they eventually left it alone, leaving Luffy with a warning that he would no longer be able to swim.

By the time the mountain bandits came back, Luffy had decided he still liked Shanks and his crew despite their cowardice, so he defended their honor. That only got Luffy in more trouble. Shanks came by to help, but soon Luffy found himself drowning. He was only saved from both the sea and its monster by Shanks, who lost his arm in the process.

A couple days later, their tearful goodbye saw Luffy being gifted a new treasured straw hat as Shanks said he wouldn’t be returning to the area for a long time if ever, so Luffy would need to come seek him when he was ready to return the hat.

For the next few days, the town was quiet before one day Luffy loudly proclaimed to Makino that he could change his lower half. Makino, who had been given lessons by Shanks on all of the devil-fruit types by Shanks, quieted Luffy down and took him to a private room to discover that Luffy’s new devil fruit was a zoan that allowed him to transform into a girl. It was a little strange, and perhaps limited in power to Makino’s mind, but the child clearly needed lessons on the difference in gender’s…but mostly only when they got older. Luffy was still too young for the talk.

So Luffy was told that girl’s and boys liked different things and used the bathroom differently, but Luffy struggled to understand. When told that girls often liked to look pretty, and boys often liked fighting, Luffy claimed they were neither since they liked Adventures and Meat. It took Luffy about a month to really begin to understand, not that the transformation really had that kind of a mindset change on them yet.

Although Luffy at first looked almost indistinguishable in each form, by the time Garp next showed his face around town, there were some minor differences in Luffy’s girl form. Her face was slightly more feminine, and her hair slightly longer, although only by an inch or two. Her eyes also had a slightly silver glint to them.

When Garp arrived, he quickly found out Luffy had met Shanks, and was quick to pull her out of the village, saying he’d live with a new family from now on. It wasn’t until they were in the middle of the forest that Garp realized Luffy looked slightly different and was told about the devil fruits effect.

When he did hear, he told Luffy that his boy form would probably be physically stronger and more durable, and his girl form would probably be more agile and flexible, so he should learn to separately fight in both of them. He then tossed Luffy in the woods again, with instructions not to turn back into a boy before she made her way back to the road. It was a few days later that Luffy, back in his boy form, was deposited at Dadan’s mountain bandit hideout, where he met his new sister, Ace.

It took Luffy a while before Luffy could make friends with Ace. A whole 3 months in fact, during which time Luffy found herself more used to being in girl form than boy form, since Ace seemed to take more sympathy on a sister than a brother when rolling a tree down a mountain at them. By the time Ace accepted Luffy, she had already met Ace’s friend, Tabitha, or Tabby for short. The two would meet up with the blond girl at the grey terminal every day where they would have fun, train, and steal treasure.

Luffy grew quite close to Ace and Tabitha, from whom he learned about fighting, hunting, pirating, and eventually even got the talk, as the two girls were curious about what gender Luffy would eventually like, something she was very confused about until they gave her the talk. After discovering the concept of sex, Luffy decided boys were kind of gross, and decided to just spend all her time as a girl. It was the gender her sisters had anyways, so obviously that meant it had to be the better one.

As Luffy grew up, she eventually was taught how to be a girl by Ace and Tabitha, learning how to take care of her hair and put on the bra that they stole for her when she started developing. She even started spending time as a boy once per month, as it turned out menstruation was rather painful.

Then when she was 13, Tabby revealed her heritage as a noble, shortly before she was taken back home by her father. That was a painful period in Luffy’s life. She lost the grey terminal, almost lost Ace, and lost Tabby to a celestial dragon. That day, she swore to become stronger to never lose anybody again, and she and Ace agreed to each set sail when they turned 19.

The next 3 years were a time of growth and discovery. Luffy learned more by instinct an intuition over anything else that the name of her fruit was the Human Human Fruit Model: Goddess Artemis. She discovered she grew much stronger at night, and become the bread winner for the bandits as her hunting skills quickly outstripped Ace’s. She mastered fist fighting, knife work, and archery, and even learned she could use silver energy for attacks, something she called lunar energy. In spite of all this, Ace still managed to hold the winning record over her when they sparred.

Luffy also learned she could transform people sometimes. It wasn’t entirely clear when she could and couldn’t do it, but she could change people’s height, gender, eyes, hair, and more, and even transform them into animals if they were pretty weak. She could also summon small objects like food, clothes, arrows, and even chairs. She found she could take to and order around certain animals, and even control the trees in the woods to a very small degree. By the time Ace left when Luffy was 16, they were both confident Luffy could survive in her own.

Luffy only grew stronger after Ace left. She discovered she could change her size, growing to a giant form when she wished it. She also discovered she could become both genders if she wanted, and when she did, she was stronger, taller, and often more feral. Makino told her this was a hermaphrodite form. Luffy struggled to remember the word though, so Makino told her not to bother. Then, on her 18th birthday, while drinking and celebrating in Makino’s bar, Luffy felt something new.

Ending Notes:

Luffy and Ace have kept their same names. Luffy was born the same, and never really felt a need to change her name. Ace, as best I can tell, is a fairly gender neutral name. In fact, I think there exists a female DC character named Ace, so I felt justified keeping that name the same.

Sabo’s name as a girl was changed to Tabitha. When looking for the origin of Sabo’s name, I found no conclusive answers, but one Reddit thread mentioning that there was at one point a covert rebel group somewhere in real life who’s mascot was a tabby cat. It was called Sabo-Tabby, in reference to Sabotage. I used this as the basis for Sabo’s female name, taking the Tabby part of Sabo-Tabby.
