How about becoming a navigator?

“How about learning some navigational skills?” Captain Millus asks.
“Don’t you know where you are going?” You ask.
“I know very well where we are going.” The Captain says. “The problem is that space is vast and difficult to traverse. Gravitational orbits can be used to slingshot us and have us spend less fuel or reach our destination faster and it requires a lot of studying. A route 25% longer could end up taking 10% less time.”
“I see.” You reply.
“Then there are also all the locations in between us and our next destination.” The Captian continues. “We could pass an asteroid field with three palladium mines in it. Would be wonderful to buy some palladium ore from them and transport it to the nearest refinery. Except, if I don’t haver to time to look at the star charts, we could fly past them without even knowing.”
“Oh, now I see.” You say. “Yeah, that does sound useful?
