Home Economics

For the most part, Lauren always enjoyed her last class of the day because it was Home Economics. It revolved around the ideas of common things you would do at home, the essentials. She could swear though that Mrs Hyde hated her. She would always give Lauren the hardest assignments or put her on the spot.

Lauren usually was successful, but resented that Mrs Hyde never relented once. Mrs Hyde was probably the oldest teacher at the university and Lauren also often tried to take advantage of her seniority by manipulating her way into being successful during the semester despite the hardships that were thrown at her.

Mrs Hyde also was at the beginning stages of dementia which Lauren often tried to exploit. Now as her mom led her to her final class, Lauren had regrets of everything she had ever done to the woman. But it was surprising to her that as they entered, Mrs Hyde wasn’t there. Instead a younger woman who looked in her 40s stood at the front of the class. “Hello, class, come on in. As you may have noticed, your usual teacher isn’t here today. I am Georgina Hyde. I am her daughter and I will be substituting for her for the remainder of the semester. As you might know, my mother has been having problems due to her age and it has come to the attention of the college that some students have been exploiting the horrible disability and turning it into a means of passing the class. I will uphold my mother’s teaching methods, but I will also ensure that this behavior is corrected. Now, last you left off, you were going to get into the family unit of this course which centers around nursing, disciplining, and training a child. Now, we don’t have an actual child and usually we would just use baby dolls for this part, but I have been told by the dean that there is a student here that would be perfect for modeling and demonstrating this unit. Will Lauren Adkins please come to the front?”

Lauren’s eyes widened. There was absolutely no way she was going to- “Lauren! Miss Hyde called for you!” Her mom yelled. “Go on up!”

Lauren blushed as all eyes turned to her, some snickering in response to the scolding.
