There are a million thoughts racing through your mind in this moment. The one thought that you just can’t shake is that of Sarah and the kids. You look at Melanie and say, “I’ve had so much fun with you two but I love Sarah and there is no way I can take this any further.”

Melanie takes a moment to process what you told her but then says with disappointment, “I understand. I knew you were too good to be true. Sarah is lucky to have you!”

You give Melanie a big hug and let her know that you hope you can still be good friends and maybe even play a few rounds of golf together in the future. You then say goodnight to Kat and head back to the uber. You give the driver your address and he pulls out of the driveway.

The as the driver turns off the street, he gives you a glance in the rear view mirror and says, “I’ve seen plenty as an Uber driver, but that takes the cake. How does a guy like you turn down two beautiful women like that?”

His words eat at you a bit. You think of the famous Wayne Gretzky quote ‘you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.’ You seriously debate telling him to turn the car around but don’t. As you arrive at your house just a few blocks away you exit the car and head into the house. You immediately head upstairs, strip down to you boxer briefs and hop in bed. Just as you are about to fall asleep you hear the ping of your phone. It’s a text message from Melanie that reads, “I had a really great time tonight and hope we didn’t come on too strong. I’d love to hang out with you again, even if we are destined to only be friends.”

You read the message two or three times. You then look at the pictures of your family on the wall of your bedroom and know that you made the right decision. You choose not to respond at that moment. You shut off your phone, lay your head on the pillow and wonder when you will awake from what you are certain is a wild dream.
