Chapter 4

Meeting someone new
His uncle
In the days that followed finding out about Brian moving into the area, naturally you’d kept a close eye on your new neighbor. You wanted to know what his situation was, what type of person he was now, and also whether he was living with anyone else. You got your answer when one day you saw Brian walking down the street with an older man. The other man was overweight and seemed to be balding. The weather today wasn’t that hot but he looked to be sweating and breathless anyway. Beside Brian, it was like night and day in terms of physical fitness. However, you noticed there were some similarities between the two. The hair color, the facial structure- it occurred to you that they might be relatives, which might explain the odd pairing.
When you got home, you mentioned this new information to Katie. “That’s so weird. You really think they’re living together?” She asked. “Well- they were walking this way. If we just happen to jog in that direction, you might ‘accidentally’ run into them.” You suggested with a mischievous smirk. She grinned. “Great idea baby! Oh, but- aren’t you worried Brian will recognize you?” She asked. You shrugged. “I’ll just wear a hat and sunglasses. Incognito.” You offered. She grinned again and said “Great idea honey, be right back” she said, quickly changing into her tight and sporty workout outfit. “Let’s go solve this mystery!” She told you with clear excitement, rushing out in the men’s direction.
The older man’s slower, shuffling gait gave you and Katie a chance to catch them before they got home, and when she saw the man’s face she was shocked. “Wait a minute, no way… coach Dan? is that you?” She asked, and as you looked towards Katie’s face, you saw a curious mixture of surprise, pleasure, and apprehension. It was hard to interpret. The fat and balding man looked up at the two of you “Huh?” He asked, clearly caught off guard. But he looked closely at Katie and after a minute his eyes lit up. “Wait… ohhh, Katie! Wow! You’re all grown up now, aren’t you?” He asked, running his eyes over her body in her tight workout clothes. He licked his lips, and you shuddered at how repulsive this guy was. Katie giggled. “I guess so… wow… so, um, Dylan, this is my old volleyball coach Dan. Dan, this is my husband Dylan.” She said, introducing you with a smile. Dan’s eyes narrowed a little at the word ‘husband’ but he shook your hand anyway.
“Well it’s nice to meet you. You know, Katie was our star player back in the day. I was pretty tough on her though- she was a rebel so I had to ride her pretty hard” he said, grinning at the reminiscence. Katie giggled again “I really wasn’t that good… you’re exaggerating.” She told him, clearly tickled by the praise he was giving her. “So, you guys are living together?” Katie asked, and Dan looked over at Brian. “Oh yes- I have a, uh- bit of a heart condition now, so- they say I shouldn’t live alone. I wanted to be closer to family, and my nephew Brian here was looking at this area too, so- it just worked out perfectly.” Dan said, and Brian nodded. “Yeah I’ve already chatted with Katie a few times, but I don’t think we’ve met Dylan, I’m Brian” your old bully said as he shook your hand.
Clearly the disguise had worked, so you just smiled and nodded. “Nice to meet you.” You told him as Katie put an arm on Dan’s shoulder. “Coach Dan I am sooo sorry to hear about your medical condition. Please let me know if I can ever help with anything.” She offered. Dan smiled. “Well I appreciate the offer- the house is nice, but it could definitely use a woman’s touch every now and again” he said, nodding towards her. “Of course. Well I’m only a few doors down, so come see me any time.” She offered her former old and out of shape coach. He grinned, and you saw a little naughty twinkle in his eye. “I’ll do that Katie. We have a lot of lost time to make up for.” He told her.
