Chapter 9
by SneedFeednSeed
You make your way downstairs only to be met by your brother, Assim.
His eyes widen when he sees you
"A-Amira?" His voice is shaky, as if surprised to bump into you. Since when is he up this early?
Immediately suspicious, you question him. "And where are you off to, little akhi?"
Your brother Assim is a thin, scrawny 19 year old boy with messy hair. He has soft features, almost effeminate. Shy and quiet, he's never been one to cause trouble. If anything, he's always been the victim of other people's actions. You remember being in school and watching him get bullied by the other boys. The disdain your father showed for him last night has you curious what exactly your little brother has been up to.
Although, by the looks of him... maybe your father was right to call him a dayyuth. Most men don't dress like that. What on Earth is he wearing? Why are his jeans so tight? Why has he styled his hair like that?
Your brother's voice cracks. "Just out. I'm going to meet a few friends."
You look at him incredulously. "Dressed... like that?"
"It is... for a concert. We are driving to Manchester. Please don't say anything."
You're still staring at him in disbelief. Your little brother's always been a little... effeminate. But this is taking it to a new level. He looks so girly. No wonder he used to get bullied.
You decide to break the silence with a joke. "Could you have picked tighter jeans? Does your... thingy even have room to breathe?"
Your brother blushes hard at that, and attempts to stammer out a response. "They shrunk in the wash! And there's plenty of space"
You start giggling maniacally. "Little akhi, I have done enough clothes shopping to know these jeans were bought from the women's section in Primark."
"It's a trend right now! I-It's for the concert!" His face reddens further. He's like a deer stuck in headlights. Yeah sure, and I'm the new Caliph...
You decide to push his buttons further and take a step towards him. "And who are these friends you are talking about? Are they the same girls father mentioned yesterday?"
He looks scared now, as if you just caught him in the middle of a horrific act. You start to feel a little bad. You ease off. "Assim, I have known you long enough to know... you're not like other boys... But please be cautious of what you're doing. If mother, or Allah forbid, our father saw what you're wearing right now they would probably send you on a plane back to Riyadh to stay with our uncles... That's if, and I mean IF father doesn't kill you first. You look like a girl!"
Your brother gulps nervously. "I... I know, you're not wrong Ami, you're not... But look, father isn't here right now! He's gone, Amira. For the next six months! I have been wanting to go to a concert since I was 13 years old. We can actually act like normal people for a short while. Please let me have this... I'm begging you sister, I will do anything for you. Just... keep this quiet. If mother asks, I'm visiting my friend Marek's house."
Hmm.
You're caught in a dilemma here. On the one hand, what your brother is doing is almost certainly haram... And father asked you to look out for the family while he was away... On the other, your brother makes a point. If father is away for the next six months, this gives us the perfect opportunity to do everything we've always wanted to. You might be getting married in six months! Now will probably be the only time you get to experience life by yourself. How harmful could going to a concert be, really?
What does Amira decide to do with Assim?
