Chapter 99 by outa outa

You change the subject to

His background

Jessica : "So this thing, desire you have, whatever it is. Is that why you're so timid around women?"

It seems like, whatever the issue was, he was now much more candid. Maybe because he had already told you his secret or because he was too excited about the prospect of actually getting what he wanted.

Peroh : "I guess so... I've always been that way. Ever since I was little..."

You realize you know very little about him.

Jessica : "Oh, did you grow up with common folk or a magic family?"

Peroh : "I grew up in the slums of Tricorn City. I never knew my parents, the other boys said my mom didn't make it to my first cry and my dad was a good for nothing drifter that skipped town as soon as he knew he would be a father."

Jessica : "I'm so sorry, that sounds awful"

Peroh : "Oh, don't worry, I've had my whole life to get over it. The worst part is the pity so please don't make a big deal out of it."

From his look he meant it. It seemed like nearly everyone here from common background was taking a major step up in station and weren't too keen on dwelling with the past.

Peroh : "Anyway I'm sure you don't know where Tricorn is, I wish I didn't know. It's a favor forsaken cross road between three kingdoms where near do wells will escape the authority of one kingdom by crossing over to the border of the others. Being born a baby with no family or even a name I was taken in by a gang of boys, many of whom had similar stories to mine. They, we, were rough and didn't always feed ourselves through strictly legal means but we did feed ourselves."

He seemed to have some fond memories of those boys.

Peroh : "Now, most sorcerers are discovered early. They burst into flames, throw a heavy object or find that animals will talk to them. Healers and divination sorcerers... not so much. The other boys just thought I was lucky, I had a knack for knowing when something was going to go bad and bailing on a deal. But no one thought it might be a magical intuition until one day the promise was too great and my pleas to not trust a group of bandits were ignored. We went to meet them in their camp and things went bad. Real bad."

The memory was still obviously vivid in his head.

Peroh : "The bandits demanded a bigger cut of the fence and our leader at the time tried to call their bluff. They didn't like that. Swords were drawn and several of us didn't make it out of the camp. I dragged a friend out covered in his blood. The others told me to leave him, he had an obviously fatal gash across the neck and it was only blind adrenaline and loyalty that had me making the foolish attempt at saving him... and then he got up and started running. The blood had stopped flowing, his wound healed. It wasn't until we had gotten back to the slums that we realized what must have happened. I never learned who contacted the guild but later that day someone showed up to bring me here."

You hadn't pegged him as the heroic type but maybe there was a difference between bravery and dominance.

Jessica : "Wow, that's so much more intense than my story..."
