Chapter 22
by razorswift
Well?
His HP say no
While the idea itself was nothing that John was opposed to, looking at his HP bar he was very doubtful of that... "Uhm... I'm at 1... No, 2 HP currently, so I don't think training would be the best idea, or do you have something that could get me up again?" Shaking her head, Mariana just turned away from John while mumbling, "Why didn't you say that in the beginning? I'm pretty sure I have something lying around that should get you to full strength again." Meanwhile, she went to a chest in the corner of the ship, opened that and rummaged through it while cursing about her own disorganization. After a minute or so John heard her triumphant shout of success and saw her coming back to him with a tiny glass bottle filled with a red liquid.
"Is that an actual Potion? Like in RPGs?" "Yup. A weak one, but it should be enough for you." His life had seriously turned into a real RPG... But he was not about to complain about that, since it was certainly more entertaining than his normal life, if not also more dangerous.
Popping open the sealed bottle, John immediately was hit with a sweet and citrus smell... was that usual for a potion? "Is that smell normal or are there like different flavors for potions?" At that, Mary had to laugh long and hard "Hahahahaha... You could say that there are different flavors of potions, yes. But not as a marketing gag, but because they are made differently. There's a high chance that the more potent your potion is, the less tasty it gets because of the ingredients. Or that is just my experience with it, maybe there are some ways to change the flavor or some ingredients to make them taste better. Never really bothered with that since they are tools and not refreshments... well, in the soda refreshment kind at least. Oh and by the way, you have to chug them in one go, or their effect won't work"
Finding that explanation sufficient, John just brought the bottle to his lips and drank the whole thing in one go. He could immediately feel his HP returning to him, in a sense that he felt more alive and awake again... Maybe these things also had a 'wake-up' aspect to them, like with coffee? Who knows, not like John would find out at this moment. Looking at his character sheet, he indeed was back to full health, so the potion was probably even too strong to be really worth it...
"Now, what was that about training? I think that would be something that I could very much need in the future if Gaia's words in the book were to be believed... Uh... where's the book by the way?" Looking around John did not find the book, not even a trace of it. The pirate had an answer for that, however, "The book disintegrated when you blacked out. Its purpose was probably finished, so it left this world as if not even existing in the first place. And to answer your first question, yeah, training would do you good. As I said, I was never the most powerful mage or fighter, but I had to get around that by learning how to fight properly. Do you have a preferred weapon? So we can start your training with a weapon like that so that you don't have to learn too many styles for now."
At that point, John remembered that he hadn't told Captain Storm about his spear when summarizing his story "Uh, yeah, I already have a spear, but I can't use it yet because it needs too much Strength, so if you had some kind of spear that'd be great." Nodding at that, she dove back into the chest again "I should have a spear lying around, it's probably a pretty shitty one though," she said while hanging in that chest, disappearing with her whole upper body inside the rather small looking chest. John was at a certain point now that he wasn't really surprised by that anymore, at least not now...
After some loud clatter, Mariana heaved herself out of the chest again and in her hand was a golden spear with numerous gems. And that thing was supposed to be cheap, John couldn't really believe that? Taking it into his hands, he inspected the spear a bit more thorough. The spear was pretty much just as long as he was high, it was entirely golden, the shaft was engraved with fine designs reminding John of trees and plant life. The blade was just as golden and in the middle of it lied a cluster of various gems that gave off different colors from different angles. If he didn't know the power of the rather plain looking spear in his inventory, John would be pretty sure that this thing would be even more powerful. So he checked the stats of the spear:
Wow... okay, this was actually pretty shit, no wonder Mariana said that it was a bad weapon... "Uh... okay, yeah this is pretty crappy, but hey, at least I can use it. So still, thanks for that but are you sure this is the best weapon to train with? It's still quite sharp and everything," John said, looking up from the spear. Meanwhile, Mary had seemingly pulled out a... wood sword out of the chest and waited for him at the other end of the cargo hold they were in. "Don't mention it, it would've rotted away in that chest anyway if you didn't want it. Also, don't worry about me, kind of immortal, remember? Now, let's make this easy for you: try to hit me, I'll only be defending and hit you if you leave a big opening. I don't expect much from you now, seeing how you never had any fighting practice, right?" At that, John had to shake his head, he indeed never had any kind of practice before, only seeing how one would fight with a spear in various video games and movies but most of the heroes rather used a sword for some reason unclear to John.
So John did the only thing he knew to do right now and put the spear under his arm and simply charged at his training partner, who swiftly redirected the thrust of his spear upwards, making John lose balance by that and sweeping his legs out from underneath him. "Seriously? You think brainlessly charging at an opponent was a good idea? You'd be dead within a second if you try that in a real fight. Now get up and try harder!"
But John didn't actually get up, or not immediately at least because there was something in his vision that needed a moment to read: An Achievement...
Okay, on the one hand, it was slightly humiliating that he had been given an achievement for that, but on the other hand, seeing as how most mages seemingly never really went melee, it was something that made sense.
He could also feel how that new skill worked because he now had a bit of a better understanding on how to handle his weapon and how to actually properly attack with it, so he did. Still lying on the ground, John gripped the shaft of the spear with one hand and swung it in a wide arc towards Mary, who simply took a step back from him, but that gave John enough time and space to properly get on his feet again thanks to the momentum of the strike. That momentum went further when he turned the spear in his hands and swiping directly at the chest of the captain with the blade. The strike wasn't really fast, or strong for that matter, but it still hit home into his opponent's chest, since she didn't expect him to improve in such a short time span.
The strike wasn't deep or anything, but it had one effect: It ripped her bustier right open. Thankfully (or maybe unfortunately depending on your view of the whole thing) she didn't wear anything beneath it, so her breasts just popped out of there thanks to the pressure of the corset. In a matter of seconds, John's brain had practically shut down from the simple fact that there was a glorious pair of tits in front of him. For that, he immediately got a wooden sword to the head
-5 HP
Ow... there must've been some real power behind that hit if he took that much damage from a wooden sword. The hit fulfilled its effect though because John's brain seemingly had enough blood again to work and now give a proper reaction of him turning red and turning around. "S-Sorry, it wasn't my plan to do that..." "Yeah... sure it wasn't you pervy, little boy... Dammit, now I have to change... Okay, give me a minute, then we can resume and don't turn around or I will properly cut you the next time around!" At that, John vehemently nodded and kept his eyes shut, just to be sure not to gain even more of her ire than he already had.
A minute later or so, he felt a tap on his shoulder and turning around to it he saw that Mary now wore a leather vest that was a lot less revealing than her outfit before... Nothing John didn't expect, but there was nothing he could really do against that...
"Now, ready for round two? I won't go as easy on you now, seeing as how you seemingly actually know what you're doing."
How does he fare now?
