Chapter 9 by Wikia Wikia

Who is there?

Hercules

Stoick, Hiccup, Gobber, Mirabel and a small entourage of other Asgardians all gathered at the harbor as their visitor arrived.

Most visiting envoys came by some elaborate vessel. A flying ship, the back of a dragon, even a personal vessel meant to make themselves look more impressive. This god was an Olympian, and while most Olympians are all about the pagentry of their position, this particular god wasn't quit the same.

In the distance of Asgard's endless ocean, storm clouds gathered to darken the day, and from the center of the storm, a brilliant golden light emanated. In the parting center of the clouds, one could barely make out the outline of a brilliant set of gates -- molded in divine gold with thunderclouds decorating the exterior -- that opened by themselves. In leu of a person walking through the doors, a bolt of lightning leapt out from behind the heavenly gates. They danced and lept through the clouds, before striking the very edge of the docks

From where the bolt had struck, there stood a man. His appearance embodied the physical, masculine embodiment of his people; his body sculpted with musculature, bronze-colored skin, wearing a blue cape, dark brown belt, brown wristbands, and matching warrior sandals that left his thighs and arms bare. His entire being radiated a soft, golden glow indicative of his godly stature.

Stoick opened his arms in greeting.

"Hercules! Great to see you, old friend!"

"Hey, Stoick," said Hercules, who reciprocated with a hug to greet his old friend.

Mirabel gave a shocked look to Hiccup.

"That's Hercules?"

"Yup."

"As in the Hercules."

"Uh huh."

"Wow."

Classical Mythology -- both Greek and Roman -- were some of the most powerful of the old faiths in Europe, if not the entire world. The old religion had died, but the region of the world was smart enough to ensure that their faith lived on through every method it could; art, architecture, written word and cultural osmosis. Even as newer faiths came to try and purge their own, the gods and monsters of the region lived on as folktales and epics and cartoon shows for all ages.

Even as their faith became a shadow of their former selves, they are still famous across the globe and thus have established a comfortable living in the mind of every human on the planet. It was a cosy gig to be sure.

While Olympus and Asgard held a "stay in your lane and I'll stay in mine" stance towards each other, Hercules in particular has old history with the Aesir. They say that when he was young and mortal, he was brought to Asgard to compete for the role of Thunder God against Thor himself. While the details have been lost to time, it's said that he managed to avert Ragnarok. Or at least prevented it from starting prematurely.

Now a genuine Olympian himself, Hercules had offered to play the role of envoy when Odin's descendant Stoick reached a hand out to their Mediterranean neighbors and they have been friends ever since.
