Her baby daddy

Jenn had spent the past 18 years - almost half her life, she started realizing! - raising Samantha with only the help from her parents. She always wanted to avoid the touchy topic whenever Samantha would ask who her daddy was and why she didn't have a daddy like the other kids. Jenn always changed the subject or came up with a little white lie, especially as her attention to raising Samantha precluded any chance of hopping into a dating scene that was ruthless to single mothers.

The truth was that Jenn was a few months shy of her 20th birthday when she became pregnant with Samantha. Her hopes and dreams of romance were smashed when the guy skipped town and everyone in her life went away except for her family. This was a sore spot for Jenn, who could never track him down for any scrap of child support, but she ignored it and soldiered on to focus on being the best mom she could be to Samantha.

But now Samantha was 18, and she wanted closure on this part of her family history. She had done some digging, and had even submitted a DNA test. Now she could finally meet who she was looking for, and hopefully have someone to walk her down the aisle and maybe even reconcile with her mother.

"Mom," Samantha held her hands over Jenn's eyes as she led her into the kitchen, "I've been thinking a lot about our history, and I have a huge surprise for you."

"Oh really?" Jenn asked excitedly.

"Oh yes, I have someone I'd like you to meet."

With that, the two girls entered the kitchen and Samantha put her hands down. Jenn's heart sank when she realized who was sitting at the table.
