Heat

Chapter 21 by mrdarcydoms mrdarcydoms

The air between you shifts. The careful distance of years of ordinary friendship thins under the alcohol and the weight of what she just admitted. You hold her gaze longer than is strictly safe. Alice doesn’t look away. The soft smile at the corner of her mouth deepens, and she leans in another fraction across the small table, close enough that you catch the warm scent of her perfume under the bar’s low lighting.

“I’ve thought about that night more than I should admit,” she continues, voice lower now. “The way you were looking at me. The way I was looking at you. I went home and couldn’t sleep. Kept wondering what your hands would have felt like if you’d actually reached for me. What would have happened if I’d just closed the last bit of distance myself.”

Her knee brushes yours under the table and stays there. Not accidental. The contact is light but deliberate, the heat of it cutting through the fabric of your trousers. Alice notices your reaction and doesn’t pull back. She takes another slow sip of her drink, eyes still on yours, the academic composure fully loosened into something hungrier and more direct.

“You’re sitting here with your whole world turned upside down and all I can think about is how close we came that night. How much I wanted you to kiss me. How much I still wonder what it would have been like if we hadn’t stopped.” She lets the words hang, then adds, quieter, “I don’t feel like stopping this time.”

The booth suddenly feels smaller. The quiet bar around you has faded into background noise. Alice’s hand rests on the table close to yours, fingers slightly curled, the invitation clear without being spoken outright. The old almost has become a present tense question, and the way she is looking at you makes it obvious she is ready for the answer to be different from the one you both chose years ago.
