Chapter 62 by creampiehound79

What's next?

Heartbeats and Hallways

The closer the Uber got to Emily’s hotel, the more my knee bounced; a restless drumbeat of pure, electric excitement. It had been far too long since I’d pulled off a real surprise for her, and we were minutes away from the payoff.

“Take it easy, tiger,” Iris said, her voice low and amused, "you're gonna wreck his suspension." She placed a firm hand on my knee to still it. The warmth of her palm seeped through my jeans, grounding me instantly. We shared a quiet smile, the kind that carried years of unspoken understanding.

I’m not sure how long her hand lingered there; long enough for the air between us to feel charged; but suddenly she pulled back, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. It was the first time in forever I’d seen Iris flustered. The driver’s voice broke the moment: “We’re here.”

We both cleared our throats, grabbed our bags, and stepped out into the bright Miami sun.

The elevator ride to Emily’s floor was quiet, but the subtle tension from the car still hummed between us. Iris tapped away on her phone, texting Emily some cover story about “finishing emails” before their supposed "FaceTime shopping trip". I watched the floor numbers climb, my pulse syncing with each soft ding.

When the doors slid open, we stepped into the hallway. Before we’d gone ten feet, Iris stopped me with a gentle hand on my arm.

“Joe…” she said, voice soft.

I turned, and she closed the distance in one fluid motion, wrapping her arms around me. She folded herself into my chest, her petite frame fitting perfectly, her heartbeat quick and steady against mine. Rising onto her tiptoes, she tucked her chin over my shoulder, one hand cradling the nape of my neck. She was warm; her breath soft against my skin, raising goosebumps along my arms.

“Thank you for letting me be part of this,” she whispered into my ear, the words barely louder than her pulse.

She pulled back just enough to rest her forehead against mine, eyes closed for a quiet second. I didn’t move away. Not because I wanted more, but because the moment felt exactly right; like a calm before the storm, centering me for what waited behind that door only steps away.

When we finally broke apart, her smile mirrored the joy exploding in my chest.

“Come on,” she said, voice light again. “Let’s get you to your girl.”

She turned and walked ahead, confident stride carrying her down the hall. My eyes followed for a beat; the way her jeans hugged her hips, the easy grace in her movement. I’d always noticed Iris was beautiful, but it was her brilliance that had always impressed me most: sharp, loyal, funny, fierce. And in that instant, it hit me how similar she and Emily truly were; two extraordinary women, both gorgeous in their own fierce ways.

By the time she reached Emily’s door, I’d snapped out of my thoughts. I was here for one reason: to ask the love of my life to marry me. Having Iris; the other woman I cared about so deeply; by my side only confirmed it.

This was right. This was perfect.
