Chapter 18 by Phreakinsane
With the room paid for, and you being tired and quite weary from the days adventures, what do you do?
Head to your room.
After your sparing session with Aera, you had thought that you would simply find a room for the night and sleep. But as you lay in bed your mind wandered to the cute young huntress you vouched for a few hours earlier. You realized that she was likely terrified right now. The more you tried to calm yourself the more you worried about Jenessa.
You knew that she was a civilian posing as a soldier. Unable to sleep, you quickly slide out of bed and get dressed again. You sigh in relief as you feel the comforting touch of the hardened leather scabbard of your sword as you pick it up and secure the scabbard and frog back onto your belt.
You couldn't quite place why but the more you thought about the events since your entry to the city, the more uneasiness you felt. Having learned years ago to trust your instincts, you pace around the room and slowly analyze the days events.
The first issue that bothered you was the incident with trader. Considering how he calously turned us over as refugee soldiers instead of getting us into the city, (a fine repayment for saving his horse, if not his own life.)
The gutless merchant was clearly a spineless rat, if not also a liar. In some twisted sense if truth, he did get us into the city, albeit at the cost of our freedom. There was definitely a sore spot there, and quite possibly some unfinished business with the merchant.
The second was the issue with Jenessa. She was clearly too young to be a solider, and her garments likely didn't fool the King. There was something about his smile and the way he spoke regarding her that set your nerves on edge.
The third event was the interaction with Aela. You realized she seemed all-too-eager to spend time with you. A red headed beauty like hers stuck out, even in a much larger city like this one.
It's not that you felt yourself unattractive, but in your experience women of that physical caliber were always more difficult to get into good graces with, unless they wanted something from you.
Granted, she clearly wanted the secrets of my martial abilities, same as the King. But why would she seem so **** for me to spend time with her after the training had finished?
That's when the pieces of an unpleasant puzzle started to click into place. You remember how eager she was to learn, claiming that she was a simple bakers daughter. But although her skills as a solider were indeed not up to current standards, there was a fierce intensity in her eyes that belied the simple origins she claimed.
Furthermore, she wielded her blade with a comfort and fluidity that was uncommon, even for trained soldiers. The more you think of it, the more deceptive you feel she was being. You start to feel like she was trying to stall you from going into town. Why would she be so **** to keep me from going to relax with the others?
Having considered the three things that were troubling you the most regarding this day, you decide too:
