What does he decide?
He removes his "selfishness" from himself
Jamie thought he might be losing his mind. He probably was. So why not have some fun with it? He'd been accused of being self-centered his whole life and on some level he knew it was true. So what did he have to lose? He found "selfishness" in himself and yanked.
Huh. He didn't feel different. He thought about Ashley. She'd be home any minute, so be should get ready. He went back into the kitchen to put the flowers he bought in a vase.
In the bathroom, he was tidying up when he decided to use mouthwash. It took him a second to find it. He almost never used it, and while he could have used Ashley's he knew she didn't like that. He swapped his tie for the one she'd gotten him for his birthday last year. He didn't care for it - thought the pattern was too effeminate - but she'd love to see him wearing it.
As Jamie was combing his hair he saw a text from Ashley. She was running late, so he decided to be as ready as possible when she got home. He grabbed her heels and her makeup bag and headed to the driveway.
The evening air was pretty chilly but he wanted to be outside when she got home. She was very anxious around punctuality and the last thing she needed was him making her later. He thought more about his strange interlude. He had been so busy getting ready for Ashley that he'd almost forgotten about it. He still felt like he had his "selfishness", whatever that meant. It was just detached from him, ready to be applied to anything.
He still wasn't sure this wasn't some kind of bizarre mental breakdown, but he had a few minutes to kill. He thought about what else he could try.
