He decides to do a little investigation.

“Hey!” He shouted from the window. “Stay there!”

Genji bounded towards the infantry and the POWs. “Where are you going?”

A short man with a mischievous grin answers Genji. “Somewhere…” the others behind the short man laugh.

“Can I ask them some questions?” Genji asks.

“What for?” The short man inquires.

“I want to find this girl,” Genji produces the picture of the girl, Mary Gold, from his pocket to the short man.

The short man gasps slightly, taking the picture. “Who is she? She’s pretty.”

“I was hoping one of your captives here would know. I found this picture of one of the dead enemies,” Genji looks at his fellow Japanese and concludes he can’t read English.

“She looks Japanese. Why would she be with one of these pigs?”

Genji shrugs. “I’m trying to find that out myself.”

The short man scratches his chin and nods slightly. He gestures to the others and tells Genji to take his time. When Genji turns to face the prisoners of war, he isn’t sure what to do with them. Surrendering was a concept he knew very little about, and it was often promoted to **** such cowardice. Finally, he sighed and presented the picture to the Americans with a question in good English. “Do you know this girl? Her name is Mary Gold.”

One of the men swallowed and stared at the picture longer than the others. Genji frowned and stared at the man when he shook his head. Genji knew he was lying. He dismisses the others.

“I think you know her,” Genji says. “Who is she?”

The man looks down. “I’ve seen her, I think.”

“You think? You think you’ve seen Mary Gold?”

He swallowed again and shook his head. Genji slapped the man and shouted at him. “Yes! Yes, I have! I…I knew her husband more, though. I’m sure she’s dead, too, honestly. She was a nurse, and…well… you don’t exactly care who you kill…”

Genji grunts. He hadn’t killed any non-combatants, but he knew it happened. This whole campaign in the Pacific was naughty and filled with gore. But it wasn’t anything new. It was war.

“Where was she?”

The man asks Genji why he cares, but that earns him a rough beating from the short man. “Answer the question!”

Genji stands by, asking his question again. Finally, the man is **** up. “She was returning with the rest of the army. You probably plan to **** her, don’t you?”

“I’d never **** myself on a woman. Besides, she's Japanese, isn’t she?”

The man refuses to answer. Genji would rather hear it from Mary anyway. He looks at the soldiers and waves them away. Genji supposes he’ll search the medical tents, hospitals, and POW camps to find Mary Gold.
