Chapter 54 by Elrompeortos2000 Elrompeortos2000

What happened?

He's stuck in a cage of his own mind

Chapter 40: A game of cat and mouse.

Iris stood by the bedside, her gaze fixed on Kayn’s pale face. Her voice was soft but filled with worry. “Will he recover?” she asked, unable to mask the tremor in her tone.

Athena, her expression grave, folded her arms across her chest. “It depends,” she replied, her voice measured and deliberate, carrying the weight of her wisdom.

Iris’s brow furrowed. “Depends on what?” she pressed, her fingers tightening around the edge of the bed.

Noor, stood nearby, crossed her arms and leaned slightly forward, her piercing gaze fixed on Athena. “Yes, what exactly determines his recovery?” she asked, her tone sharp yet laced with a genuine concern she rarely showed.

Athena’s eyes lingered on Kayn for a moment before she answered. “If he completes the memory,” she said simply, her voice calm yet heavy with implication.

Ikaro, who had been quietly observing, took a step closer. “What do you mean? Isn’t he reliving it now?” His usually jovial demeanor was replaced with an uncharacteristic seriousness, reflecting the group’s shared anxiety.

Before Athena could respond, the air around them shifted. The wind picked up, swirling leaves into the room, and from the vortex, a figure began to materialize. A voice, teasing and light, broke through the tension. “What my dear sister is trying to say is that Kayn is caught between a rock and a hard place,” Artemis declared, her lips curling into a sly smile as she fully emerged.

Iris immediately dropped to one knee, bowing her head in deference to her goddess. Ikaro, Aerys, and Entinos quickly followed suit, their gestures reflecting the reverence due to a divine presence.
Noor, however, stood tall, her posture unyielding and her expression calm as she met Artemis’s gaze.

“It’s nice to meet you all under less dire circumstances for once,” Artemis said, her tone playful as her eyes flicked to Noor. “Even you, Noor.” She winked, her smirk growing wider.

Noor’s lips quirked in response, her tone equally teasing. “The pleasure is mine, goddess. I’ve been eager to meet the one who saw enough potential in Iris to deem her worthy of your blessing.”

Artemis tilted her head, amusement sparkling in her eyes. “And here I am. Did I pass your test?”

Noor inclined her head slightly, her voice lilting with a good first impression admiring the goddess beauty and personality that could be seen first hand. “With flying colors.”

Ikaro cleared his throat loudly, his sharp tone cutting through their banter. “Apologies for interrupting, but we have more pressing matters at hand.” His gaze shifted to Athena, his concern evident. “What’s happening to Kayn?”

Athena exhaled, the weight of her thoughts evident in the gesture. She hesitated briefly before speaking, her voice low but firm. “As Artemis said, Kayn is stuck.”

Iris’s head shot up, her eyes wide. “Stuck?” she echoed, confusion and fear mingling in her tone. “Is that why he hasn’t woken up yet?”

Athena nodded, her gaze steady as she met Iris’s worried eyes. “Exactly. You’re all aware that each time Kayn recovers an artifact linked to his past, he retrieves a fragment of his memory and falls into a comatose state. But this time, things are different. The memory he’s reliving right now is one of immense emotional significance.”

Her words hung heavily in the air. Artemis, noticing her sister’s hesitance, stepped forward, her voice light but firm. “In simpler terms, he needs to finish this memory to wake up and continue your quest.” She glanced at Noor, her smirk returning. “Easy enough, right?”

Noor narrowed her eyes, her voice dripping with skepticism. “Too easy. There’s more to this than you’re letting on, as usual.”

Athena’s expression hardened. “You’re right,” she admitted, her tone unflinching. “The Ereboisians have laid traps within some of his memories. They’re not going to let him regain his powers without resistance.”

Iris’s hands clenched into fists, her voice barely above a whisper. “Bastards.”

Aerys crossed her arms, her determined posture betraying a hint of unease. "What can we do to help, then?" she asked, her voice steady despite her unfamiliarity with the arcane.

Artemis turned her piercing gaze toward the group. "Except for Iris and Noor, there’s not much you can contribute in terms of magic. But that doesn’t mean your roles are any less vital."

Athena stepped forward, her regal tone commanding attention. "Indeed. As soon as we begin unraveling the barrier within Kayn’s mind, the Ereborian’s defenses will activate."

Ikaro raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into a nervous smile. "That doesn’t sound like tea and biscuits."

"It’s not," Artemis replied with a wary smile, her fingers gently stroking the sleek feathers of Orion perched nearby. "We’ll be contending with shadows, mindless pawns conjured by the Ereborian’s malice. They exist for one purpose: to destroy anyone daring enough to break the curse."

"Shadows?" Aerys asked, her brow furrowing. "This just keeps getting stranger."

Athena’s gaze softened, though her voice carried an edge of warning. "Do not underestimate them. They require no spells to defeat, but their persistence is unmatched. Fire, steel, any weapon you wield will suffice to vanquish them. The challenge will be enduring their relentless numbers while we complete the spell."

Aerys’s lips quirked into a grin, her fiery spirit undaunted. "Sounds like fun. What do you say, Horns? Ready to spar with your own shadow?"

The stoic warrior nodded, his deep voice steady. "Always."

"We’ll hold them off," Ikaro said, his serious tone cutting through the tension. He turned to Iris, his expression softening. "But you’d better finish what you need to. Kayn’s counting on you."

Iris met her brother’s gaze, determination shining in her eyes. "We won’t let him down."

As the trio left to prepare, Athena turned her focus to the two women standing before her. "Now, Iris, Noor, this spell will demand a great deal of mana. Noor, your experience makes you invaluable here, but Iris... you’re new to this. Are you ready for such a task?"

Iris’s breath caught, but she straightened, her voice unwavering. "I might not be as seasoned as Noor, but Artemis chose me for a reason. Kayn’s always been there for us. I’ll give everything I have to make sure we do the same for him."

Artemis’s lips curved into a rare, approving smile. Proud of Iris, she knew she was the perfect chosen for her... this only proved her further.

Noor folded her arms, her expression carefully composed, though her voice carried an undercurrent of concern. "Let’s not waste time with speeches. The sooner we start, the sooner we’ll have him back."

Athena and Artemis exchanged a glance before moving into position near Kayn’s still form. Their voices began to weave an ancient chant, resonating with the power of the gods. The air hummed with energy as the incantation deepened. Noor turned to Iris, her expression softening despite her usual guarded demeanor.

"Stay close and follow my lead," Noor instructed, her voice gentle yet firm. She extended a hand toward Iris, her palm glowing faintly as she began to channel her mana.

Iris hesitated for a moment, feeling the weight of the task pressing down on her. Then she nodded, her resolve hardening. She mirrored Noor’s movements, her own hand beginning to emit a soft, golden light. As their energies intertwined, a surge of connection flared between them, tethering them to the spell and, in some unspoken way, to Kayn.

For Iris, the sensation was overwhelming yet profound. She could feel Kayn’s presence, his pain, his struggle, but also his unwavering strength. A knot of emotions formed in her chest: admiration, empathy, and the love. Her thoughts lingered on every moment he had risked himself for them, and she vowed silently to return the favor, no matter the cost.

Noor’s expression was harder to read. The connection to Kayn stirred emotions she was unaccustomed to confronting. She’d spent years perfecting her composed and cold persona, yet now she found herself grappling with a vulnerability she couldn’t ignore. She focused on the spell, pushing her emotions aside, but the depth of her concern for him burned quietly beneath the surface.

The chant grew louder, the language of the gods filling the space with an otherworldly resonance. The glow from the spell intensified, illuminating Kayn’s prone form. Despite the strain coursing through her body, Iris refused to falter. Noor, ever composed, tightened her jaw and poured more of her mana into the spell, her determination matching her partners.

Outside the tent, the air thickened, its once-crisp vitality replaced by an oppressive stillness. The faint rustling of leaves gave way to an unsettling quiet, as though nature itself recoiled from the unnatural forces converging. Shadows began seeping into the landscape, twisting and writhing like sentient smoke, contaminating the night with a palpable malevolence. The acrid stench of sulfur hung in the air, mingling with an icy chill that made even the seasoned warriors shiver.

“They’re coming,” Entinos muttered, his deep voice steady but heavy with the weight of the impending battle. His eyes narrowed as he gripped his axe tightly, preparing to stand against the faceless horde.

“Get ready!” Ikaro barked, his sharp tone slicing through the oppressive quiet. His gaze flicked toward the glowing tent where divine energy pulsed like a second heartbeat. Worry etched lines into his face, but he **** it aside, focusing instead on the task at hand. He had to trust his sister and the others inside.

The first wave of shadows surged forward, an amorphous tide of darkness given form. Their movements were chaotic yet unnervingly deliberate, like predators zeroing in on prey.
Entinos met the charge head-on, his long sword carving arcs of silver in the torchlight. Each swing dispelled one shadow, their forms dissipating into wisps of smoke before being swallowed by the night.

“Hold the line!” Ikaro ordered, his voice firm but tinged with urgency. He darted between skirmishes, his torch lighting the way as he directed the defense. Aerys, nimble and relentless, wielded her sword and torch with precision, ensuring that any shadow slipping past Entinos faced swift judgment.

“They don’t tire, but we do,” she gritted out, her breath coming in short bursts. A shadow lunged at her from the side, claws reaching for her throat.
She sidestepped deftly but miscalculated the second attack. The impact sent her sprawling, and the weight of the shadow pinned her down.

Before it could strike, a piercing cry shattered the moment. Orion, dove with talons extended, rending the shadow in a single, ferocious sweep.
Aerys rolled to her feet, panting as she glanced at the bird. “Thanks, Ori. Drinks on me later,” she quipped, forcing a grin as the eagle cawed triumphantly.

Inside the tent, the energy reached a fever pitch. Athena’s and Artemis’s voices echoed in a harmonious yet otherworldly chant, the language ancient and alien, resonating with the power of the cosmos. The orb of mana above Kayn shimmered, shifting colors in a mesmerizing dance of gold, silver, and sapphire. The tent itself seemed to vibrate in harmony, the air inside charged with an intensity that made every breath heavy.

Iris and Noor knelt on either side of Kayn, their hands glowing as their mana flowed into the spell. Iris’s heart pounded with a mix of fear and determination. She could feel Kayn’s presence in her mind; a warmth, a flicker of his essence reaching out to her. It was as if their souls briefly touched, binding them in a way she couldn’t fully comprehend.

Noor, usually poised and aloof, found herself shaken by the raw emotion surging through her. For once, her sharp wit and teasing demeanor faltered. She cared for Kayn more than she wanted to admit, and the vulnerability unsettled her. She poured her mana into the spell with fervor, her lips pressed in a tight line as she channeled her feelings into power.

Outside, Ikaro’s voice rang out again, **** but determined. “SIS, WHATEVER YOU’RE DOING IN THERE, DO IT FASTER!” His torch lashed out at another wave of shadows, but the attacks came faster, and their stamina waned.

The chanting reached its climax. Athena’s voice boomed with a final, divine word of power, her eyes glowing like twin suns. Artemis raised her hands, drawing the celestial energy into a single radiant burst. The tent erupted in light so brilliant it pierced the veil of night, blinding everyone in its wake.

The wave of energy surged outward, cleansing the field of shadows in an instant. Their forms evaporated like smoke before the wind, and silence fell once more.

When the brilliance dimmed, Ikaro, Aerys, and Entinos rushed into the tent, their weapons raised in case of lingering threats. What they saw brought them to a halt.

Athena, Artemis, Iris, and Noor lay **** on the ground, their forms eerily peaceful. Threads of ethereal light extended from their temples to Kayn, who now floated above the ground, his body radiating an aura of celestial power. The light pulsed gently, casting intricate patterns on the tent walls.

Ikaro lowered his torch, his brow furrowed in bewilderment. “Well,” he muttered, his voice breaking the heavy silence, “this just got a whole lot stranger.”

Where did they went?
