He's gone, but he leaves you something

The next few weeks are filled with thoughts racing through your head. Should you just forget your father and try to move on with life? Or should you try to meet up with him? You know he doesn't live in the same house anymore, you tried swinging by already and saw the for sale sign out front, but you're sure that you can find him if you only have a little time to look into it.

Sadly, you don't get the chance. One morning, while you are getting the boys ready, you hear a knock at the door. Robert had already left to look at some properties and he would have told you if someone was coming by for a meeting.

You call down the stairs to let them know you heard them, hurrying to dress the boys and bringing them downstairs to play.

When they are settled you go answer the door, finding a police officer at the door. Worry and panic starts to worm it's way into your heart. You are sure that something happened Robert.

"Are you Lexus Halpas?" the officer asks, surprising you. You've been Lexus Kane for two years now, that should have been in their records.

"That was my name before I married." you say, "I hope you don't mind me asking, but why are you here? Did something happen to my husband?"

He sighs. "This is about your father, Jason Halpas." he says.

You blink in surprise. "I haven't talked to my father in two years." you admit, "I've sent letters and such, but he never responds. He wasn't... pleased with my choices."

Another sigh from the police officer. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but as you're his only living relative of age that we can reach, we must inform you." he says, "We found you father last night, deceased. It seems to be if natural causes, but we won't be able to confirm that completely until the autopsy is finished."

His words wash over you, leaving you in stunned silence. You hadn't seen him around for a few months, but he seemed fine the last time you spotted him. "My father is dead?" you repeat, voice breaking.

He nods solomly. "I also want to bring up the custody of your brother. Were you aware you had one?"

You shake your head. You are too stunned to speak. Your father had another child? It seemed so strange. He didn't like men romantically and was determined to be loyal to your mother to the end.

"He was found next to your father, all his information tucked away with him in a basket. It seemed that your father had full intentions of abandoning him somewhere, though we don't know where. As you are his only kin, we wanted to see if you would be interested in gaining custody of him?"

You nod and then shake your head. "Can... can I discuss this with my husband first?" you ask.

He nods and gives you a sympathetic smile before handing you his card. "Call me when you've made a decision." he says before walking away.
