Have Inez explain it to herself

I had Inez use her camera to record a message to herself. We tried to think of a plausible explanation for her presence here, but couldn't come up with something that was sure to work. Inez settled on telling herself that everything was OK, the guy she was with could be trusted, and he was a hypnotist she had met at a party, and he was trying to prove to her that he could make her forget ever meeting him. It was a big joke and if it actually worked, she owed him a date, ha ha.

She recorded the message to herself, and I hoped the way her eyes were reddened from crying didn't look suspicious. We left about 10 seconds of silence at the beginning so it would start playing as soon as I commanded her to forget. Inez pressed play on the video, then looked at me and nodded.

“Inez, forget ever seeing the Ultimate Dating App. Forget meeting me, forget being captured, forget everything having to do with it.” Then I quickly tacked on, “When you see the app on your phone, just ignore it, don't open it.” A second or two later, a visible change occurred in Inez's whole demeanor. It was, I guess, clear that she had forgotten it all. The chill attitude I had commanded suddenly gave way to tense caution. She didn't know where she was or who I was or what was happening. Seconds later, her own voice coming from her own phone explained the situation. It was weird, and I was surprised that she seemed to almost believe it. When the video ended, she looked up at me, dubiously, and said, “So, you're a hypnotist?”

“I dabble,” I replied.

“Did you make me cluck like a chicken or take off my shirt or anything?”

“Nothing like that,” I said. “The worst you endured was being told to dump beer on your head.”

“Ew, gross!” she replied, putting her hand in her hair and then pulling it away and sniffing it.

She stood up, eager to leave, “So I owe you a date now, is that it?” she asked, clearly uncomfortable.

“It's OK,” I smiled. “I didn't expect you to follow through once you forgot everything.” Inez looked relieved. So she had forgotten the app. But did that release her from my command? As she walked towards the door, I followed her, grabbing a pen and a scrap of paper. Just before she opened the door, I said, “Inez, give me your address.” Without flinching, she took the paper and jotted down an address. I wasn't sure if that proved anything, though. “Oh, and take off your bra and give it to me.” She gave me a look of anger, but still complied. “You pervert!” she barked.

“Show me your boobs,” I said calmly. With an exasperated sigh, she lifted her shirt and gave me a two second glance at her well-formed breasts. As she put her shirt back down, I said, “Now forget everything that happened after you started walking to the door.” Her scowl melted away and she reverted to the confused expression she had worn before my little tests. I waved to her as she walked away, then closed the door and hurried back to the couch.
