Chapter 44 by Almax Almax

What are you doing?

Hangin' out and doing errands!

Alright, you wanna catch up with Cameron and Lexi now! And it's well timed, too, because just as you decide to go and find them, they walk into the central Courtyard from the main school building, and start walking across it. Oh, perfect! That's awesome, it's like your thoughts summoned their proximity. Or maybe their proximity summoned your thoughts. If it can happen with smells, you shouldn't consider thoughts off the table either.

In the time since you last saw her, it looks like Lexi's thrown on an oversized grey hoodie over the top of her school uniform, with big black block letters that say "Step on No Pets". She's walking just a bit behind Cameron, with both hands in her central hoodie pocket.

Cameron, still in his school uniform, has a big cardboard box that he's carrying in both arms, overflowing with bits and bobs. From what you can see, you don't recognise most of what's in their at all, but you are proud to report that you recognise some of the screws and cogs that are in some of the bits as screws and cogs. And the one sheet of metal, too.

Cameron's head is bent forward over the top of the box as he walks, looking down and reading off of a loose piece of paper that he's got precariously resting on top of the overflowing stack of items. As you happily approach-skip towards them, Lexi pulls a partially-scrunched brown paper bag out from her hoodie pocket, pulls half a croissant from that, and takes a big bite of it before putting it back in the bag, scrunching the top of it again, and putting it back in the pocket along with both of her hands again, chewing as she follows Cameron.

"You sure you don't want me to carry some stuff?" She asks. "Sounded pretty heavy when Rhys put it on the counter."

Cameron looks up from the paper and back at her with a smile. "No, but thanks. It's really not that bad. Here, look."

He turns fully and extends his two arms out, holding the box for Lexi to hold, right as you come up to them both. She takes her hands out from her hoodie pocket, leaving the croissant bag inside.

"Hey guys!" You announce your presence with great enthusiasm. "I'm here to help out too!"

"Oh, hey Debbie." Cameron says to you with a fulfilled looking smile. For some reason, it makes you feel really fulfilled too, even though you have no idea what the box of stuff will go on to fulfil. But at least he seems excited about it.

"Check this shit out, Debbie." Lexi grunts as she takes the box off of him, then stumbles back a few steps. "Woah!"

In a flash, she's tumbled over backwards and landed on her butt in the grass, dropping the box next to herself and spilling out some of its contents. She rubs at her sore behind with a laugh, but it clearly wasn't that good-feeling of a landing.

"Woah, are you alright?" You and Cameron say at the same time. You share a quick, confused glance, then look back to Lexi and both rush to help her up.

She laughs again as you each take an arm and get her to her feet. "Geez, Cam, what are you made of? That's got to be at least thirty kilos. Way to emasculate me in front of the wife." She says, not letting go of your hand even once she's up again. You try to pull it away, but she won't let you.

"Oh, sorry." Cameron says.

He reaches up and rubs at the back of his head, as you grumble a half-hearted comment about not being her wife yet or even being sure if you will later on, tugging your arm ineffectively until you eventually manage to pry your hand from Lexi's grip, mostly succeeding by virtue of her suddenly having a realisation and checking her croissant -- it has been partially squashed. Her shoulders sag sadly, and then she eats the last of it in one bite, which brightens her up again.

The three of you take a moment to get down on your hands and knees and collect all the bits and pieces back into the box again. You ask Cameron what it's all for, and he explains that it's all stuff from your Equipment Maintenance teacher Rhys Meddle. Some of it is because he wants to use to try make his bladed shields a bit better, and the rest is things that Professor Meddle wants him to deliver around the school to various people.

Once the box is fully packed again, Cameron gets down low, and hoists it up in his arms again, lifting with his legs. Which is the good way to do it, you think. It doesn't seem to cause him much strain.

"Okay, so-" Cameron pauses to blow on the piece of paper, because some loose blades of grass got stuck to it, but not only do the blades of grass stay stuck, the entire sheet falls off the box again. Total defeat.

You pick it up, try blowing the grass off yourself, then wipe it off on your pants when that doesn't work and put it back in place on top of his pile. He seems appreciative.

"Okay, so the first place to go is a third year named Lola's dorm, to drop off some 4x22cm round-capped rubber rods she requested." Cameron says. "It doesn't say what room it is, so we'll just have to look around."

"What are they for?" You ask, furrowing your brow. Cameron shrugs.

"Targets, maybe?" He says. "It's about the size of a small.... gnome. On a big diet."

The three of you get prepared to head out together.
