Half-species

Chapter 20 by The Dark Traveler The Dark Traveler

Half-species are the direct result of one species breeding with another, normally humans, but not always. Dragonkin could be considered half-dragonborn. Half-elves and half-orcs are the most common, as these species have cultural links to humans. Elves often consider humans as their closest kin despite the difference in aging; they have very similar physiology and culture. Elves consider humans to be more creative and motivated. Their short lives caused them to solve problems that most elves would leave for decades before trying to tackle. An elf musician might spend a decade composing a perfect symthony where as a human bard would have come up with 6 new songs in that time and would be able to think of a new one on the spot if pressed. An elven architect could spend a centurary designing the perfet bridge over a river, that would have eroaded into a vast casum by the time the plans were finished.

Meanwhile, orcs have a history of kidnapping humans to mate with or seeking out humans to mate with if they lose their mating rituals. The culture of half-orcs coming from violence and rape often leaves half-orcs to be despised by both human and orc societies, despite the specific circumstances of their birth.

Half-species share traits of both parent species, often combining some of their better traits. Half-elves live only around 200 years but have the creativity of a human and the patience of an elf.

Half-orcs have the strength and tusks of an orc but the intelligence of a human.

Half-giants are significantly smaller than a giant, especially if the mother is a humanoid, but they are stronger and tougher than a regular humanoid.

Orogs are half orc and half oger. They are smaller and faster than ogres and bigger and stronger than orcs. They tend to have intelligence closer to that of an orc and are aggressive.

There is, however, one example of a half-species that takes the worst traits of its parents. The dwelf is half elf and half dwarf. They have the inability to grow a beard like an elf. A reduced lifespan to about 200 years, as taller and less hady than dwarves and not as nimble as an elf. They are often mistaken for a long-lived beardless human.
