Gwendolyn gets home after a 36-hour shift

Even though she'd been doing it for a few years, these day-and-a-half calls at the hospital always wore Gwendolyn out. She would be fine through the first 12 hours, hit a lull, get a second wind up through the next 12 hours ... but then the last half day seemed like it went on forever.

She rolled up to the house in her white Honda Accord, and pulled into the garage. As a doctor, she made the best salary of anyone in the house. She offered to pay more of the expenses in exchange for some perks at home -- one of which was a coveted spot in the garage.

She climbed out of the car, and dragged herself into the side entrance, leading into the kitchen. It was a little after 8pm, but fairly quiet in the house. She knew the other girls had probably eaten dinner already, and those who were home were off doing their own thing. She saw Naomi's car in the driveway, as well as a green bicycle propped up to the side of the garage. Who's bike was that? she wondered.

Gwen opened up the fridge and found a Tupperware container with some pasta and meatballs. The general house consensus was that unless something had a strict label on it, any leftovers were fair game. Gwen was so famished, she didn't bother to heat it up -- she just plopped herself down at the island, grabbed a fork, and began to eat the cold noodles.

She heard a noise coming from the foyer just outside the kitchen.
