Chapter 2 by brevdravis brevdravis

What do you do?

Grab the book

Your curiosity takes over, and you find yourself prying at the edges of the hole in the ceiling. The aged brittle wood comes apart easily in your hands, and before you know it, the hole is wide enough to remove the book easily.

With some trepidation, you reach your hands out to grasp the cover of the book. It feels like aged leather in your hands, and as you touch it, it seems to move into your hold easily, as if it wants to be touched. With some surprise, you note that there is no title on the cover, merely a symbol that you think glows softly at your touch. However, the glow ceases as you concentrate on it, leaving you with the distinct impression that you imagined it.

You look closely at the cover, taking in every detail. It is a deep brown color, the symbol on the cover taking up most of the surface. The symbol reminds you vaguely of a spiral, with a slight hook on the end of the outermost line. Each line of the spiral is heavily accented, with intricate designs running along them. The light is not good enough for you to make out every detail, but they appear to be figures of some kind....

Finally tearing your attention away from the cover, you examine the rest of the book. Pieces of paper with writing on them have been inserted into various portions of the book. You note that they appear to be hastily scribbled notations in a light feminine hand. Many appear to be rapid translations of Latin, and another language that you do not recognize. Your curiosity is piqued, and you have not even opened the cover yet.

You desperately want to take this book back to your dorm to examine it more closely, but it really is not yours. You could turn the book over to the executor of the house, but you hesitate, knowing that it could mean that you will never be able to plumb the mysteries of the tome fully.

Take the book home, or turn it over?
