What she really needed to do, Kate decided, was to get a view of the whole island, or as much of it as she could. She headed towards the mountains.

Soon, she was off the beach and under the trees, and then she was past the trees and looking up at a mountain. It towered above her, though it was the shortest one, and she swallowed hard before starting to climb.

The stone was rough under her bare feet, and she had to continually pick her way around and over sharp rocks. The silence was deafining... until, somewhere above her, came the sound of something hard scraping over the rock.
