Chapter 27 by vgadict vgadict

What's next?

Go to maintenance

"Scrapped?!" you shouted. "But she's sentient. Doesn't that matter?"

"Searching protocols," stated MPAD-24 in it's droning voice. "No special procedures for handling sentient synthetics found in Starpoint's protocols. Continuing to follow Starpoint's standard procedure for damaged synthetics." MPAD-24 then hovered near a panel along the wall and soon several small silvery discs emerged from a nearby slot. Each moved toward 6T9 and affixed themselves to her surface. Slowly they began to lift her and eventually her frame hovered slightly above the floor. Finally, MPAD-24 began to move down the hall followed by the carried 6T9 and you behind. After a few turns and hallways, you reached a doorway for another section.

As MPAD-24 approached, the door slid open, revealing a rather messy looking, junk strewn room beyond. "This is maintenance," stated MPAD-24 as you entered the room. Surveying the contents, you saw what appeared to be spare parts from various machines. There was also a sound from the far end, possibly of someone hammering on something metallic. The rhythm wasn't continuous, which led you to suspect it wasn't from an automated source.

"Will they check her soon?" you asked.

"A technician will examine this unit when available. Would you like to continue your tour?" replied MPAD-24.

"No, the tour is over for now. We need to have someone look at 6T9 as soon as possible to determine how serious the damage is, and how it may affect her." You didn't know anything about sentient machines, but if she was badly damaged it may be important to fix key components before her systems completely degraded or shutdown.

"According to the current queue, this unit is fourth in line for service. The estimated wait time is fourteen hours. Would you like to wait?"

"Fourteen hours?! We can't wait that long. We need to make this a priority," you pleaded.

"Authorization required for priority escalation. Please enter authorization code," droned MPAD-24.

"Authorization Code? Are you serious? How about FIX-HER-NOW!" you yelled while motioning your finger from MPAD-24 to 6T9

"Code invalid," it replied, before dodging slightly as you swung the back of your hand toward it.

You barely noticed the hammering at the far end had stopped, before a voice called out. "Who are you, and why are you here?"

Who is it?
