Chapter 5 by DreamingSpace DreamingSpace

What do you do next?

Go talk to your roommate

You've lived in this apartment with Lisa for about six months now. Her prior roommate was Shelly, a close friend of yours. Shelly got sick and had to move back home to her parents, and she begged you to take over her lease so Lisa wouldn't be left in the lurch.

Lisa is very religious and was not a big fan of living with an unrelated male. She's also shy, though, and ultimately decided that someone Shelly swore was okay was better than trying to advertise, or getting evicted when she couldn't cover the modest rent herself. It was a choice between potential homelessness, or living with someone that made her feel unsafe. Ultimately, she found you were less risky than her other option, given Shelly's assurances.

So far you've got along by virtue of both of you being clean, quiet, and respectful. Lisa is kind but distant, although she gets uncomfortable if anyone is intoxicated inside the home. Shelly hinted she might have some bad associations there - it's not so much of a burden to drink a few beers in your room, if you want to drink, and just leave her out of it. Sometimes you cook for each other or play board games together, but you can't get really close. She has a boyfriend in a committed long-distance relationship, and she's 'guarding her heart.' They write each other long letters, on real actual paper, in addition to texting like a normal couple. You do NOT have a shot here.

Most of Lisa's classes are in the afternoon or evening, and she's usually studying this time of the morning. When you emerge from your bedroom in a warm bathrobe and fleece pajama pants, she's stationed at the tiny, battle-scarred kitchen table. Your landlord doesn't think she's ready to pay to turn the building heat on yet, so Lisa is equally bundled up in a bulky white sweater and big fuzzy slippers. Dark hair escapes from her messy bun and frames a round, pale face behind the equally round and pale frames of her glasses.

"Good morning. The coffee is hot, if you like."

What do you say to Lisa?
