Chapter 3

What is the item?

Glittery pink lip gloss.

Kathleen nudged several objects aside to pull out a long narrow bottle of lip gloss. It was one of very few brightly colored items in the purse. Bright pink and sparkling with far too much glitter. Kathleen had to laugh; the item felt oddly out of place in her perfectly manicured hand. It was so tacky, so wild. Kathleen couldn't imagine the sort of person who would actually go out in public with this stuff on her lips.

Certainly not her; no, she'd always been straight-laced and proper. Even as a girl, she'd only barely ever tested boundaries with her parents and she'd never deliberately gotten in trouble. She couldn't possibly relate to the life she imagined the owner of the purse must have lived. Wild, care-free. Possibly a stripper.

Kathleen laughed. She didn't have any idea what a stripper would wear. For all she knew, this stuff was actually in style. Richard had been very strict with what she was allowed to wear or how she was allowed to do her hair and makeup. It was like being married to a politician. She never really bothered to keep up with trends; Richard just bought her things and she used it.

She turned the lip gloss over in her hands to read the label. The brand name seemed to just be the word "PINK" and where she'd have expected the name of the color, it just read "B1-MB-0." She laughed again. She'd have expected something outlandish and comical, like "G-litt-irl Power" or "Sex Blossom." B1-MB-0 was disappointingly boring.

Still, as she turned the tube over again in her hands, she was struck by the way it glittered. It was eye-catching but not overly gaudy, as she'd initially thought. She did feel terribly cheated by Richard. He'd taken her best years from her and for what? Sure, she had her two daughters, and she loved them dearly, but she'd never lived. Not really.

She looked around at the location she'd pulled over. She was on the outskirts of some small town she didn't recognize. She couldn't be too far from home, judging by the time and how much gas she still had in her tank. She should go ask someone for directions back to town. It wouldn't be a big deal. She lifted her hand to put her car in gear and realized she was still holding the tube of lip gloss, when a crazy idea popped into her head.

'I'm never going to see these people again, so what's the harm if they see it? It could be fun to try it... Just to see how it feels to tart it up a bit.' Kathleen had never really been very attention-seeking, and Richard kept her dressing fairly conservatively. Nice, but in a simple sort of way. Ignoring the voice in her head that screamed how insane it was to use a random person's lip gloss, she popped open the little bottle and pulled the wand out, raising it to her lips before she could talk herself back out of it. It was just a bit of harmless fun.

The lip gloss felt delightfully cool on her lips, and it had an intoxicating smell she couldn't quite place. Something heady and thick that made her slightly dizzy as she covered every corner of her lips with the glittery stuff that made her lips tingle. She pressed her lips together and separated them with a soft popping sound, then checked her reflection in the mirror.

Surprisingly, it looked good. Really good. Like, she should really wear a whole lot more pink; it was totally her color. She winked at herself and smiled. "Mmm. Sexy." She tossed the rest of the purse in the back seat but slipped the lip gloss inside her blouse, secured by her bra strap. She surged with a sexual confidence she hadn't felt in ages, if ever.

Lifting a hand to mess up her perfectly-styled hair, she punched the car into drive and pulled away from the curb to explore the town. She wondered quietly if she'd run into any hot guys and what they'd think of her new look.

Where does she stop?
