Give June a shower (Something non-sexual)

You see a yellow stain spreading on the bottoms of June Phillips's nurse's whites.

"I wet myself," June says. "I'm sorry."

"Wait, June, I'll help," you say. You quickly dress, take June by the shoulders, and leave Frances Cook's office to walk June to the Nurses' changing room.

June shivers in your arms as you sit with her on the bench.

"Let's get you out of those clothes and into the shower," you say.

"I'm so sorry, Ms. Bates," June says. "I wanted it so much. But it was just too much for me."

"That's all right," you tell June. "I don't think you did anything wrong. Are you on shift?"

"No, Ms. Bates," June says. She's still quivering against you.

"Can you just go home after we get you a shower and some dry clothes?" you ask.

"I don't know," June says. "I feel shaky."

You undress June. When she seems unsteady on her feet on the slippery shower floor, you disrobe and join her.

"Thank you, Ms. Bates," June says.

"Just sit here on the shower chair," you tell June. "I'll make sure you're clean."

The shower head is at the end of a hose. You unhook it from the regular position so you can use it to wash June close up.

"Ms. Cook is a lesbian," June says.

You nod. You wet a washcloth and add some liquid soap.

"And she's running some sort of strange game with the volunteers," June adds. "Cara is part of it."

"Yes," you say.

You sponge June from navel to knees with the soapy washcloth, including her flaming-red bush and labia. June sighs as you rub the soapy cloth gently across her body.

"I don't know about Julie," June says. "I think she and Cara are just girlfriends and Julie isn't really part of it."

"Probably," you say. "Julie has had girlfriends at work before."

"Yes," June says. "Did I get you in trouble, that day with Mary and Brian Forbes?" she asks.

"I really don't know how all that happened," you say.

"It was like a dream," June says. "But I do remember you. And Mary, both of you. How good it felt."

"It shouldn't have happened," you say. "There, you're clean." You turn off the water and hang up the nozzle and hose.

"I watched you today," June says. "With Ms. Cook, and Julie, and Cara. Is Julie right, are you a lesbian?"

"I...I think I am," you say. "Or I could be if I chose to."

"After all this, and today," June says. "I was thinking I should find a new job. Or transfer out of the department."

"You can count on my reference," you say. "You're a good nurse, June."

"But..." June begins. Her voice tails off into a whisper. She looks you in the face, her pale blue eyes meeting yours.

You lean over to see her eye to eye. "But, June?" you ask.

"I'll stay," June says. "For you. If you want me to. Do you want me to stay?"

You flirt with the notion of following June to her new job, but you would be giving up so much seniority, and it would be hard to find another senior nursing job at a reasonable distance from your small town.

"Gloria?" June asks. "Do you want me to stay?"

The two of you are still naked in the shower stall, face to face as you lean over toward June as she sits in the shower chair.
