Ghosts of the Past

Nightingale had spent days looking for Whisper but she was nowhere to be found. As a last resort she went back to every place they'd ever met, the docks. She looked around for a while but there was still no sign.

Then just as she was about to give up and call it a night a shape materialized in the darkness, as smooth and silent as a phantom.

"You've been busy. I've been watching you try to find me. It's cute to see you care so much."

“I know who you are,” Rikki said quietly. “Sandra.”

Whisper didn’t flinch.

“So, he finally told you?” she asked, voice unreadable.

"If you were able to figure out who I was then I'm sure you know I work with him. You used me. I thought we were..." She stopped herself. "Why are you doing this? Why use me like this?"

“Because the filth out there shouldn’t be the ones with these weapons. I’m taking them to use against them. Thanks to the Supplier I have my own arsenal now to take down those pieces of shit like him.”

The duo stood in silence. Nightingale fists clenched still hurt from Whisper’s betrayal. Whisper let out a breath and pulled her scarf down.

“I loved him,” she said softly. “I still do, in a way.”

Rikki took a step closer. “Then why all of this?”

Whisper looked out at the bay.

“You know his sister was murdered, right?”

"No, I didn't."

"No surprise, he never talks about it. She was killed by some wannabe supervillain called Black Vice. A monster. Slaughtered her in an alley like she was nothing. The case dragged on for months—evidence buried, witnesses vanished. Vice had connections in places even Luke couldn’t reach. The system was never going to bring him down.”

Rikki’s throat tightened. “So… you did.”

“I tracked him for weeks. Found where he slept. Waited until he was alone. And I made sure he’d never hurt another soul.”

There was no bravado in her voice. Just the cold certainty of someone who had chosen vengeance over justice.

“Thatcher,” Sandra continued, “he… couldn’t accept it. Couldn’t live with what I’d done. Even though part of him wanted to. He said he loved me, but he couldn’t wear the badge and pretend what I did was right. So we split. That was the cost. I didn’t see him for a very long time. In fact only recently did we get the divorce officially.”

“And now you’re Whisper,” Rikki said. “Another killer.”

“I kill murderers, rapists, traffickers. The kind the law lets slip through its fingers. I’m not looking for redemption, Rikki. I’m not trying to be a hero.”

“And what if I try to stop you?”

Whisper smiled, small, sad, and knowing.

“You won’t get the chance. You won't be seeing me again. Just… just tell him I'm sorry.”

Whisper dropped a smoke pellet clouding them in smoke. Nightingale raced forward reaching out to grab her but she was too late, Whisper was gone.
