Chapter 109

Is the nurse still there?
Getting to know Nurse Wulf
Nurse Wulf is sitting at her desk making notes in a file as you close the examining room door. She looks up with an inquisitive smile.
"How is our patient? A little calmer now?"
"She seems to be feeling better," you smile. "She's embarrassed about being hysterical."
"Yes, that's what she told me. She said she'd been babbling and felt stupid about behaving like that in front of you. I told her not to worry about it, but she insisted on talking to you."
"She didn't need to. It was a nasty prank someone played on her, and she lost her cool. Perfectly understandable."
The pretty nurse nods thoughtfully. "Miss Vallon is rather high strung. Not an uncommon condition among the students here I'm afraid. She said someone destroyed her stuffed toy?"
"Yes, her teddy bear. And left a threatening note."
"How awful. Some of these girls can be very mean. I gave her a mild sedative and told her she should rest here a while. I asked Tiana to go tidy her room and remove all signs of the vandalism so Chanel isn't triggered by seeing it again. Thank you for bringing her here and comforting her." The inquisitive smile is back on her face and you wonder how much she's guessing about seeing you and Chanel as she entered the office.
"Miss Vallon seems to have a tendency for the dramatic," you say carefully. "She wouldn't let go of me until you got here."
"Yes, I noticed," the pretty nurse says. "I applaud your professionalism for not taking advantage of her emotions."
"I'm a teacher, Ms. Wulf. I take my responsibilities very seriously." You frown slightly, as if you're offended and she shakes her head in apology.
"I didn't mean anything, I'm sorry if that sounded wrong. I'm not always good with words."
You nod as if mollified and hold out a hand. "Apology accepted. I'm probably a little touchy. This is my first time teaching at an all-girls school and I'm not used to all the drama."
"You're probably going to see a lot more," she smiles, taking your hand in a firm shake. "Some of these girls have an overdose of hormones, and not enough ways to work off their energy."
"Do they keep you pretty busy?"
"Mostly it's just minor stuff. Cramping, emotional outbursts, minor injuries. Some of them are on medication and I'm supposed to monitor that they're taking it. Occasionally there's something more serious, but most of the time it's quiet."
"How long have you been here?"
"Three years. I finished nursing school and had some trouble finding full time work and this came up. It's not really why I wanted to be a nurse, but it pays very well. I'm hoping to get on with a hospital in New York or Boston, but until then I'll make do here."
"It must be kind of dull for you. Where do you live?"
"I have a room next door. And yes, it can be dull, but I usually manage to get away every second weekend."
"No boyfriend?"
"Not at the moment," she laughs, then adds with a teasing flirt. "Why, are you interested?"
"And if I said I was, how would you answer?" you tease back.
"I don't like to speculate Mr. Sharp," she smiles. "But if you were to invite me for coffee, or a stroll, or drinks after school some time, I'd give it consideration."
"Why don't we make it Darnell," you smile. "Darnell and Madison. What about drinks after dinner tonight?" you smile.
"Unfortunately Darnell, tonight is booked. Tomorrow too. Perhaps Wednesday?"
"For someone with a dull life, you seem to be keeping busy," you smile. "Wednesday it is."
"I look forward to it Darnell," she smiles. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have to finish writing up Chanel's file."
