Getting some Grub

Rouge followed Shadow to the eating area as she admired how well the black hedgehog cleaned up. He looked so handsome in his suit, so handsome, so dashing, like he was one of those daring secret agents from the movies. She had to laugh at the very idea in her head. Her angst filled best friend, secret crush, and her best mission partner along side Omega, talking like one of those womanizing movie agents while she was the daring fem-fatale that was trying to seduce him. It was ludicrous.

As they approached the buffet table, Rouge had to admire the selection, from health nuts to people who just don’t care. She picked up a few things here and there, mostly fruit, as she was very particular about how she put them on her plate; nice and fancy. There’s no need to be a slob. Her mouth watered though as they were near the end, “They have figs!” she grinned ear to ear as she picked up a few, maybe more than a few, as she moved on.

Rouge turned and looked at Shadow’s plate and blinked a bit. It looked like the plate of a little kid! She couldn’t believe she was seeing pizza and chips next to a corn on a cob. Sitting back down Shadow looked at Rouge who realized he was staring as she went to eat to try and distract herself from having her mind blown.

“Maria introduced these to me,” which caused Rouge to look up, that makes way to much sense, she heard something she never thought she’d hear from Shadow, a playful tease “So yes, I like junk food. Pizza especially, though the occasional Hot Pocket here and there crops up,” he shrugged really not thinking this to be a big deal, “Besides I don’t really need to eat, it just…helps.”

Rouge couldn’t help but notice a twinge of sadness in that voice as she said, “Sorry,” she felt the guilt of judging him a bit. Screw if she loved him or not, that’s her best friend! “I was just surprised is all,” before looking at her meal.

Shadow took a bite out of his pizza before swallowing it, then asked “So, what’s with you and figs.” Rouge locked up at that as he said “Rouge, you practically screamed in joy, if you know my reason I get to know yours.”

Rouge paused a bit, it was only fai since Shadow was nice enough to tell him, she answered with "My mother used to serve figs all the time when I was a kid." She sighed looking at the figs for a while "They tasted so good, I haven't had them in so long."

Rouge noticed Shadow's surprise as he said "Your mother? You've never said a word about your family," noting his surprise. He also noted that he was actually listening as he continued, "You know with how often I talk about Maria, I've never really thought about hearing about your family. You feel like telling me?"

Rouge looked at him for a brief moment as she took a deep breath
