Chapter 3

Crash Landing on the Alien Planet Below
Get your bearings
The next thing you remember is waking up to a not so gentle bump to the escape pod. Groggily, you open your blue eyes and look out of the window to your surroundings. What little you can see looks very alien, and you must surmise you have crash landed on the planet the Jaeger had been orbiting. Groaning, you unfasten your belts, and check the sensor readings of your new environment. Thankfully, the atmosphere appears breathable...if the temperatures are a bit hotter than you would normally find comfortable. Rising to your feet, you pop the hatch to the pop and step out onto the alien world.
Stretching for a moment, you thankfully find that you have no serious injuries besides a slight bump on the head. You've certainly had worse in your career. Digging into the pod, you begin to gather up your supplies. Unlike most officers, one of your first priorities had been to prepare your pod for just this event. Most never seemed to think getting 'spaced' was a possibility...but you liked to be prepared for every eventuality. As such, you were able to extract a backpack full of rations and survival equipment, as well as a laser rifle for which you held the highest marksmanship rating for. Adjusting everything in place comfortably, you step away from your ruined pod and begin to assess your situation.
Climbing up to the top of a nearby hill, you extract a pair of binoculars from your pack and begin to visually search for signs of other survivors. In the far distance, you spot what looks like a pillar of smoke rising from above the alien trees. But the path to the smoke appears to be incredible rocky, and leads through an ominous looking forest. On the other hand, you see a river valley off to your left, which would make travelling much easier.
Which direction do you take?
