Chapter 8
by WhoDat?
What becomes of you now?
Get dropped off outside
Surrounded by darkness, you try to scream, but find the breath of the beast to be rancid, making your words catch in your throat as you **** on the air itself. While stuck inside the creature, unable to see, you can feel it moving at an incredible pace. Your body bounces back and forth, pressing against the lining of the creature's innards, squishing into organs. The idea of maybe lashing out crosses your mind, but you can't bring yourself to do it because of the nausea building in you from the constant motion and rank smell.
Without warning, you suddenly stop, but quickly get propelled out of the beast and into the light. Gasping for air, you look around anxiously, trying to figure out what just happened.
Before you stands Elder Jargus once more, dressed as he had the day before, with the slightest light of the rising sun peering over the horizon and onto the clouds above, telling you of the early hour of the morning. Next to him stands the lizard you had seen, its scales shimmering in a new, silver coloration that showed its rough textured body, with a frill surrounding its head. It nuzzles into Jargus' hand before elevating itself on its hind leg, standing taller than the man, then running off once more.
Jargus says nothing, simply tossing a robe to you before looking to the atrium. "Dress yourself in that, the others will be out soon." he commands.
Taking the robe, you realize you were not the only one out there, with a few of the other students you remembered from yesterday already out there. Some were standing, others were still finding their bearings as well, and even more were getting deposited onto the grounds by a variety of creatures that exited the atrium, some carrying single student loads like yourself, while others brought out as many as five students.
Not all of them were covered in lizard bile like you were, but you did note that these beasts were not being gentle as they dropped everyone off, some throwing them hard, some throwing up students much as you had been, and others even shaking their head, tossing around unfortunate individuals like some sort of toy before being released.
It was only when the last creature left and no more left the atrium did Jargus finally look to your group and speak. "I'm sure plenty of ya ain't exactly happy with your mornin' wake up today, an' while I'd usually tell ya ta stuff it, I can guarantee that ain't gonna be a normal thing for ya. I dragged ya'll out here cause it's the best time for the first lesson."
The group of students look to Jargus expectantly, although you notice a few people who seem more expectant than curious. Continuing, Jargus says "At dawn and dusk, the barriers between worlds are at their weakest. It's the best time for Conjurers ta do their thing. But before we go off summonin', I need ta know what I'm workin' with really. We may know ya'll are inclined toward Conjuration, but just what it is that ya'll are Conjuring is what I need ta know. So I'll be inducin' a test on ya'll ta see where yer strengths lie."
It was then that another student stepped forward. Tall enough that you had to guess they were at least seven feet tall, yet thin enough that you wondered if there was any meat on their bones, their body was covered from head-to-toe in some form of linen wrappings, leaving only their bright blue eyes and a bit of their yellow-orange skin showing.
"I know what you speak of. Realms, classifications, alignments, all things that come into what can be Conjured. All Conjurers have natural draws to something, but in turn, tend to struggle with others. Masters of the Infernal may not do well with the Abyss. I'm already well aware of what I can summon forth." the tall man, as his voice indicated, explained. From the way he spoke, you could tell the common tongue was not his first language, but the precision with which he said his words without mistake meant he had mastered it.
Giving a snort, Jargus crossed his large arms over his chest. "Well, don' we have a smart one?" he muttered, spitting off to his side. "But aye, that be it. While a master Conjurer can bring about any manner of bein', a smart one wouldn' waste his or 'er time with somethin' that resists them by nature." Jargus admitted. Pointing out to the tall, wrapped up man, he said "Come on over 'ere. Seein' as ya apparently know ya classification, help in givin' a demonstration.
The tall man wandered over to Jargus in long strides, stepping over the students who hadn't brought themselves to stand just yet. When he was beside the instructor, Jargus thrust out a hand. Perched in his palm was... an egg. A simple, white egg, much like that a chicken would lay.
Even the tall man seemed a bit surprised by it, but took it from Jargus' hand. "We call it the Blank Egg. An egg, like any other, that once yer mana enters it, draws forth somethin' that yer naturally attuned ta. Go on, give it a shot." Jargus explained.
Nodding, the tall man gave a slight grunt of exertion, a slight glow emanating from the egg before a crack formed in it. The shell started to fall away as a serpent hatched from it, purple with black stripes, and a small ridge of horns over its eyes. The creature had to be growing, because it quickly was large enough to wrap around the man's wrist several times, yet still be thicker than two fingers together, not able to fit in the egg it had previously been occupying.
Inspecting the serpent, Jargus nodded. "Nightplane Venom Stalker. From this, I can tell ya have a thing for reptiles, particularly those that have been touched by evil. Not bad on ya." the old man explained. The tall man nodded, apparently pleased with the creature.
Looking back to the rest of your group, Jargus clapped his hands. "Well? What are ya'll waitin' for? An invitation? Get off yer asses an' come get tested."
What sort of creature does your mana associate with?
