Chapter 4
by frogogre1
Who is the great deceiver? What was this war?
Genevieve almace
As he slept, Jollus Borin found himself in his dreams, tossing and turning as he was tossed back into the past. Long ago, the world had to have species living side by side in harmony—humans and a reptilian race whose name is now lost to time. The two races had been in harmony, living, working, and fighting side by side for as long as either side could remember.
Sadily, that began to change when she appeared the deceiver as he called her. Her name was Genevieve Almace, a woman filled with religious zeal and a hatred for all races, not humans. She saw how the humans and lizard race lived in peace and was disgusted, deciding that the complete extermination of the reptilian race was required.
The humans did not have the weapons she wanted for her war, but they did have the religion. As the faith of the world was close enough to the imperial creed to be made a part of it. Not only that, but to add to her schemes, the lizard race had a need to live in hot climates where a lot of ore happened to be located.
Soon enough, Genevieve began to spread rumors and whispers about how the lizard race was planning to use their ore to make weapons and armor to enslave all the humans in the world. Once Genevieve had gotten enough people to believe in her faith, she provided the documents supposedly proving this plan to enslave all humanity in the world.
Genevieve, having whipped the humans into religious fervor, then proceeded to lead a holy crusade to exterminate the lizard race, which sadily she succeeded. In a few years after her war had begun, the last of the lizard kin had been killed, and to Jollus Borin eternal shame, he had participated in the genocide.
He was a young man, rather than fresh and easily led. Though once the war was over, he wasn't so young anymore, and he was one of the few who wondered about the supposed stock pile of weapons the lizards had. But it was too late; the world had been changed, and it was heresy to ask if the war had been right as it was done in the name of the god emperor.
For a long time, he didn't speak the name of his former lizard neighbor's. Too ashamed by what he had done, and it didn't help that Genevieve Almace had made it illegal to speak their name in public, destroying all records of their existence besides their genocide.
He had been banned from speaking the name of the lizard people for so long by the forces created by Genevieve Almace for so long that when he went to scream it at the top of his lungs decades later as a show of defiance against what had been done to his world by Genevieve Almace, he couldn't. He tried to recall from all his memories as a youth having them as neighbors, but the name wouldn't come.
He had forgotten it, and that was what truly broke his spirit in the end—that he couldn't keep them alive even in his memories. Now the only name the lizard people had was the corrupters, a title given by people who don't know what they're talking about. As the name was given to them by the generations that came after they were long dead.
The truly maddening part was that after committing genocide and destroying half the world, Genevieve Almace was not satisfied. So she left to spread her madness and **** to other worlds, leaving people such as Jollus Borin with the guilt of what they had done. So that is the way he lives here in the swamp alone, for he is trying to find a way to honor the lizards that died all those years ago, and the swamp is the last place he could do so.
Though he tried for years to do so, the forgiveness Jollus Borin seeks from those whose true name is lost has eluded him. Though forces on the planet march, he may find a way to forgiveness, just not in the way he thought. Though it will be the way he ends up walking.
What marches?
