Chapter 4 by TamLin TamLin

Where to first: Paris or Geneva?

Geneva, of course.

William hugged his cloak tighter. This bitter cold was enough to set even his teeth on edge as he tramped through the rocky, scrubby wilderness. It was night, and the moon was high. He'd spent the day before in Nyon, but when the locals found out why he was there they became distinctly unwelcoming. Not that he could blame them: Everyone knew what the people here had suffered because of the name "Frankenstein."

He stopped to rest for a moment. Here someone had erected a gibbet from the bare skeleton of a tree, though it seemed no one had actually used it in years. William had never seen a place so lonely and benighted as this mountain pass. But at the top of this mountain was the crumbling watchtower where he might find the relic for the Countess. The thought of the final reward at the end of this long, cursed journey spurred him on. After a little way's further climb he spotted the promised tower at the summit of the peak--and look, a light was on in the highest window! This gave William pause. He was told that Dr. Frankenstein's lab had sat neglected for years. It could only bode ill if someone had taken up in it now.

As he pondered what this new development could mean, he glimpsed someone--or something--out the corner of his eye. A dirt path so faint it barely existed split off from the road here, terminating in a forsaken graveyard filled with crumbling mausoleums, haunted by night birds who flapped and squawked over its rusting gates. And yet, someone was there, seemingly waiting just inside the fence. It was a beautiful young woman. William rubbed his eyes, certain that he was dreaming. She beckoned to him. Was she a ghost? But no, he smelled her from here. She was as alive as he was. What could she be doing out here alone? And what did she want with him?

Up ahead, the tower promised secrets and peril, but it was also where he hoped to find what he was looking for. Should he continue on as planned, or see what this mysterious stranger had to say?

Should William go to the tower or to the graveyard?
