“OK. God. We’ll do it,” you tell Stef, who looks pleased in a mischievous way.
“After the party.”
“No. We have to get her out of here.”
She groans. “Fine.” She starts to follow Ellen, but you grab her arm.
“Wait,” you mutter. “We need a plan.”
“Huh.” She looks thoughtful. “Guess we can’t just walk up to her and tell her to whip it out.”
You can see with one look that figuring this out will be up to you. Stef’s ADHD is here in full effect. Even if she was capable of thought, she would be thinking with her cock instead of her brain.
You sigh. “OK. I’ll think of something. Go get the truck.”
“That’s my girl.” Stef slaps her hand on your buttock, squeezes twice, and marches off. You watch her go, take a second look at Mary, still talking to that nerd, and swallow a lot of big, meaty feelings.
Ellen is gulping beer in the kitchen. You stop her.
“What’s wrong?” she asks anxiously.
“We’re getting out of here,” you tell her.
“Oh,” she says. She doesn’t look bothered by that. A little relieved, maybe. She finds this exciting, but she doesn’t have the confidence for it. Hell, you barely have the confidence for it.
“Where are we going?” she asks, following you out of the house. You avoid looking at Mary.
“We’ll go to Stef’s.” You realize you need to do better than that. “I don’t know. Play some video games. Drink her dad’s booze.”
“Sounds good,” Ellen says. She is definitely relieved to be out of there. She didn’t realize what she was getting herself into. Neither did you, frankly. As you make your way down the walk, you look back at the house. Through a second-floor window, you catch a glimpse of beautiful, blonde hair. Is that the girl from the pool? She’s here? Better not tell Stef or she’ll go storming back in there.
And what? What, exactly, would she do? Go talk to her? What would Stef say? You love her, but she has the social skills of a litter box. And is she going to do this right in front of you? Just go and talk to that girl? With you at the same party? Standing right there?
Of course, you were just staring at Mary.
“You OK?” Ellen asks you.
“I’m good,” you reply with a big eye roll. “I think too much.”
Stef’s truck purrs to the curb, and you climb in.
Getting straight back to her house is, of course, not happening. First there’s the stop at the 7-Eleven for Icees and Cheetos. You roll the dice on a case of Zima, and the lady at the counter doesn’t card you. You love having a job. It makes you feel incredibly grown up to just be able to buy stuff. Of course… you are an adult, legally. And you have graduated high school.
But you still live at home, so it feels like nothing’s really changed.
“What games do you have?” Ellen is asking Stef as you climb back into the car. Stef has a PlayStation.
“Um,” Stef replies, looking startled. “Actually, none.”
“What? You do too,” you say.
“My little cousin was over last weekend. He borrowed them all. I can’t say no to him.”
“He took them all? Even Wrestlemania?” you ask, annoyed.
“Dude, that was the first one he took,” Stef says.
“Guess we’re going to Blockbuster,” you reply.
Gurlberg’s Blockbuster Video doesn’t look too crowded, maybe because everyone is at that damn party. The bright, yellow sign looks very welcoming at night.
Stef breaks off as soon as you’re through the door, not even going toward the video games. Someday, you can explain the concept of teamwork to her. Ellen seems to like video games a lot. She gets distracted by the guys behind the counter.
“You have to like research it in the lab,” one of them is saying. “You get the laser stuff and then you don’t have ammo anymore.”
“What?”
“Yeah, you don’t have to reload it.”
“Does it do damage?”
“Yeah, but get your armor first.”
Ellen is listening intently.
“El,” you whisper in Ellen’s ear. She jumps with a squeak. “Sorry,” she says and comes with you to the video games. You peer curiously at the boxes. A lot of them have cool-looking covers, but you don’t know much about this stuff. It’s cool that the CDs are black on the bottom. That might be your favorite part. You wonder what would happen if you put one in your stereo.
You notice someone looking at you, then realize it’s just a cutout of Pierce Brosnan from Goldeneye. You loved that movie. You also loved the sex that you had with Harry Goldin in his car right after. He was the only football player you were ever with, but it was worth it. He was hung, uh, very vigorous, and a good kisser. He was cool about your cock and even sucked it once. That night, you got home smelling like a brothel. The look that your mom gave you. So worth it.
It was a shame that Harry had been banging like four other girls at the time. Memories.
Ellen has a game in her hands. You mosey over to look at it. It’s got an angry, possibly crazy-looking guy on the front holding a rifle. It looks… intense.
“Everyone’s talking about this,” Ellen says, turning it over to look at the back.
“Whoa,” you say. It looks scary. It has pictures from the game on the back. Very spooky. “Reminds me of that movie. With the shopping mall?”
“Yeah,” Ellen says, her eyes alight with interest.
You both shriek as Stef startles you. She’s got a tape.
“We have to watch this,” she says, waving it at you. “I’ve been dying to see it. Dying.”
You take the tape from her. It’s something called ‘Showgirls.’
Rent ‘Showgirls’?
Or the scary Playstation game?
