Chapter 38 by ThomasMoro ThomasMoro

What happens next?

Future Clara gets a surprise of her own

"Oh, wow!" said present Clara to the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. "What happens next?"

The mysterious Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come showed present Clara a vision of future Rose and future Clara talking to the equally mysterious Alice and then convincing her to let future Clara take over as the Mistress of the Land of Fiction. One of the first things that happened after that was future Clara taking Alice's magic typewriter over to her TARDIS for "safekeeping."

"That was interesting," said present Clara. "What happens after that?"

"Are you sure you want to see the next Christmas?" said the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

"Sure, why not?" said present Clara. "What do I do to Rose this time?"

The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come replied, "Er, it's not what happens to Rose that should concern yo --"

"Oh, shut up and show me my future," said present Clara.

Suddenly the scene shifted to the inside of Rose and Clara's TARDIS. Future Clara walked in from apparently going walkabout with a naked Rose and saw a mysterious woman at the magic typewriter she had attained from the Land of Fiction. She wore a red dress and carried an old-fashioned children's doll which she cradled in her arms like an infant.

"Who are you?" asked future Clara.

"Me?" asked the woman. "Why, I'm nobody. I was just passing by when your friend Marcie suggested that I'd come in here and check out your magic typewriter."

"Don't be silly," said future Clara. "Everyone knows that there are no such things as magic typewriters. And I don't have any friends named Marcie."

"You do now," said the lady in red. "Though I understand that you don't see her too often. In fact, it could be said that you and Rose never see her at all."

At this point, the lady in red smiled as if at a private joke.

"Well, anyway, you really should not be in here and you really should not be messing around with my typewriter," said future Clara.

"Your typewriter?" asked the lady in red. "That's funny. I don't see your name on it."

"Sure you do,"said future Clara. "I wrote it right then. See. 'Property of Clara Oswald'."

"Oh, I see," said the lady in red. "So you bought it?"

"In a manner of speaking, yes," said future Clara.

"So if I were to erase your name like this and then write in my own, would that make it mine?" asked the lady in red as she proceeded to do just that.

"Of course it wouldn't," said future Clara. "Now leave that thing alone and get out of here."

"I'm sorry, but Miss Edith here is getting very upset at your tone of voice," said the lady in red, indicating the doll in her arms.

"Well, Miss Edith should mind her own business and tell her owner to respect other people's property," said future Clara.

"You're no fun any more," said the lady in red. "Perhaps I should write something on this typewriter. Something like 'And then Clara Oswald decided to go out and have fun -- and then suddenly found herself miles away in a strange land wearing nothing but her shoes.'."

"Don't be ridiculous," said future Clara. "That would never work. After all, you're not the Mistress of Fic --"

And then suddenly, future Clara did find herself miles away in a strange land, wearing nothing but her shoes...
