French Captain

Étienne Roger and Capitaine France

If Steve Rogers, the ultimate champion of American selflessness and integrity, had been born in France on the eve of World War II, his name would likely have been Étienne Roger. His story would be rooted in the French Résistance and the **** need for a national icon against the Nazi occupation.

Roots and Spirit: Étienne Roger

Étienne grew up in a working-class quartier of Paris during the 1920s. Like Steve, he was an intelligent artist, but was often sickly and slight of build. Yet, Étienne possessed a hardened spirit, a deep pride in France, and an unwavering sense of justice.

When Nazi Germany occupied France in 1940 and installed the Vichy regime, Étienne was determined to fight, despite his weak physique. He tried repeatedly to join the burgeoning Resistance groups, but was turned away due to his physical frailty and chronic illnesses. He fought instead with clandestine patriotic graffiti he painted on Parisian streets and by secretly distributing Resistance pamphlets.

The Super-Soldier Serum: Project "La ****"

During this time, Dr. Erskine (perhaps renamed Dr. Erskine-Leroux), a German scientist who had fled the Nazis, was collaborating with the Provisional Government of the French Republic in London. They sought to create a super-soldier to inspire the Resistance and aid in the liberation of France. The project was code-named "La ****" (The ****).

Erskine wisely understood that physical strength was useless unless paired with will and heart. He discovered Étienne Roger during a mission to secretly courier messages from occupied France to London. Étienne had endured capture and **** by the Gestapo without ever revealing the codes. This act of sacrifice made him the clear choice.

In a hidden sub-level laboratory in London, or a secret base in the Free French colonies, Étienne Roger underwent the Super-Soldier Serum treatment.

The Rise of Capitaine France

The transformation elevated Étienne to the pinnacle of human perfection. He became stronger, faster, and more agile. He became the new symbol of Free France:

* The Name: Capitaine France (Captain France).

* The Suit: His uniform bore the colors of the French flag (Bleu, Blanc, et Rouge) and featured a Fleur-de-lis or the Gallic Rooster as his chest insignia, representing French identity and national spirit.

* The Shield: He wielded a circular steel shield, painted in the tricolor design with a central white circle (similar to the French military aircraft roundel). This shield became the symbol of French endurance against Nazi bullets.

Capitaine France undertook daring missions to sabotage Nazi supply lines and **** Gestapo officers within occupied France. He was often accompanied on these missions by his loyal ally and childhood friend, Jacques (the French version of Bucky Barnes), who was rescued by the partisans during the early war.

The Battle for Liberation

Capitaine France became a living emblem of La France Libre. Whispers of his courage circulated in hidden cafés and behind closed doors, empowering ordinary citizens to resist the occupiers.

During the Battle of Normandy, Capitaine France played a vital role in facilitating the Allied advance. He served as a liaison between Allied forces and the French Resistance networks, coordinating precise attacks. He was at the forefront of the Liberation of Paris in 1944, inspiring the people of Paris in the final struggle to reclaim their city.

Fate and the Deep Freeze

Capitaine France's fate, like his American counterpart's, peaked in a moment of ultimate heroism. On a final mission to neutralize a secret Nazi super-weapon aimed at the Allies, he confronted his German counterpart, the Garde Rouge (Red Guard)—the German version of Red Skull, a supernaturally empowered Nazi leader of the "Shadow Gestapo."

In the final confrontation, Capitaine France defeated the Garde Rouge but, in the process, his aircraft (or a U-boat) was critically damaged and crashed into the frigid Atlantic waters. He made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the weapon did not reach its target.

Capitaine France, Étienne Roger, became a national legend in France, a symbol of the unyielding spirit of the Resistance. He lay preserved in the Atlantic ice for decades, the "Silent Hero of France," ready to awaken in a new age.

Is there another Marvel character you would like to imagine in a different country or historical context?
